View Full Version : FAL Reloading - 150gr or 168gr bullets?

Reloads will use LC Match brass, surplus IMR4895 powder, and WLR primers. Would you use 150gr or 168gr bullets and why? Also, how does chamber length compare with magazine length in the typical FAL (DSA Stg58A)? Thanks.

It's not a match quality rifle. The 1:12 twist is more suited to 150gr bullets. Distance to the leade can vary depending on barrel design or the ammount of use it has seen.
That being said, try it all. What can it hurt? Your biggest variable will be your powder. Your next jug of surplus 4895 will be completely different from your current batch. Any screamer load you get now will have to be reworked anew.
Have fun. Be careful.

150 Hornday FMJ. It's a very good bullet I've just recently discovered, although I'm only loading 7.62 for the Ishapore. (The FALs have plenty to eat for a while.) It's also about half the price (or less) of 168s.
But if you are just getting into reloading you will try them all.
