Looking at my Lyman 47, I noticed that there are quite a number of loads for cast lead bullets in .308 using flake powders (Unique, 700x etc.). Is it safe to use these loads with jacketed bullets?

For bolt action plinking and general shoulder abuse, I don't really need 2500+ fps. 1200 fps will be fine. The powder charges are in the 10gr-20gr range, which means I'll get more rounds per $20 pound of powder.

You can use these loads, but you may stick a bullet half way up the bore with them. Some of the oldtimers used to use light loads with a bullet loaded backward for "grouse shooting". Seems a waste of jacketed bullets to me, but I can cast for most of the calibers I use.

Another problem may be change of impact from sight setting.

Just be very careful and make sure the bullets are exiting the barrel before firing next shot.

Did I mention you can buy cast bullets cheap?

I know... for the price, I may just go the cast bullet route. Thanks.
