I have an IAI M444. The stud that holds the plastic knob on the charging handle broke. I figured I'd get a US made charging handle as a replacement to up the parts count. So, how do I remove the charging handle?

Can that stud be replaced so that I have a functioning spare?

Take the handguards off. Drive the roll pin up that is behind the knob. This holds in the stop lug. Pull the stop lug out. You may have to pop it out from inside the receiver. Push the CH forward out of it's slots. There is a spring loaded bearing underneath so expect some resistance.

If you're fussy about the looks of your receiver put a piece of tape in front (muzzle end) of the charging handle before removing it. Otherwise you MIGHT put a scratch on your receiver.
