Didn't need it, just looked "right" to me, so I bought it. Cold Steel Recon Tanto http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/csstoreonline_1918_14600276

My last Command gave me a K-Bar Tanto, 11" mofo. THAT is a knife! The CS is of course 'the original' (in America), and a solid performer. Not a fighter mind you, but a utility knife that can do defence. You chose well.

I got one of these when they first brought them out several years ago and really liked it. I have small hands so I recontoured the top of the grip on a belt sander then used it as a belt knife for years.

I finally gave it to a 16 year old kid from my church that worked his butt off one day at my Dad's place cleaning up. He wouldn't take any pay, I take him shooting every now and then, and didn't have a good knife...now he does.

You won't be unhappy with this blade.

I bought the Oyabun. I like the heft of it with the 9" blade. Haven't used it at all, but I think it want's to go camping some time.

i like the first more but the 2nd looks easier to carry.

I wanted the CS Tanto for my fixed-blade when I was in the sandbox, but all the PX had was the CS SRK. It was cheap enough and a really decent blade for the price which saw a lot of rough use - gave it to my nephew when I got back, which thrilled him no end.

Still going to buy myself the Tanto, though - I like the sheer penetration-power of that style.

Hey AndyC, glad to hear the SRK can stand up to some (ab)use. I have one and really like it. I haven't used it much, but when I need it, I'm glad to know it will perform. I like the tanto style myself, and will prolly end up with one.

Here's my SRK pictured with a pilot survival knife, a Bersa Thunder .380 and a Daewoo DP51C.

Yeah, it's a tough blade, that's for sure - wish it had a few serrations, but that's just me. I'm hoping for another one for Xmas, anyway - very impressed with it.

LOVE the SRK!!

I have had 3 - but every time one of my buddies sees it and uses it they beg me to sell it to them when they leave to go to Iraq. I have a difficult time saying no. The last one I traded just a couple months ago for a couple Camelbak hydration packs, but I will likely get another this coming weekend in Indianapolis at the big gun show.

Here is my next project knife, a $35.00 Boker blank. I want to reshape the blade a little and make the guard more pronounced. Give it some dymondwood scales and a leather sheath.

I have one of those machetes picture at the top. They are damned near impossible to pull from the sheath when mounted on a backpack, The saw serrations on the top of the thing grab the nylon sheath.

During the mid '90 I was working for Disney as a form carpenter. I lost my chisle in the middle of a big push and for three weeks (12-14+ hour days, 7 days a week)I used my SRK in its place. Most of this was beating it threw 3/4 ply wood with a 25 oz eastwing framing hammer, prying and cutting metal banding. every thing you would do with a beater chisle and a work knife.

Buy the time I got a day off and replased my chisel the back of the blade on the SRK was mushroomed like a spliting wedge. I ground it smooth on my bench sander, re ground the tip some, sanded some of the burs off the handle and carried it for another 2 years.

I abused that knife daily for about 5 years before I broke it throwing it. Possably the best money I ever spent on a knife.
