lordtrader & I have been tossing this idea around for a while. We figured that we would pool our resouces and knowledge to help each other (SOCAL FAL) build up our IMBEL FAL kits when all the group purchases are all completed.

This thread is here to organize and brainstorm on how we are going to proceed.

If you live in the SOCAL (SOuthern CALifornia) area, and would like to join up with other SOCAL FNFAL members in your area. Feel free to leave your name and county that you live in. That way we have an idea where we may end up building these kits. May be in a couple of different places, depending on where and when people can meet up.

We may have to break up into smaller groups (cells) if the group gets too large.

I'm in the Inland Empire (San Bernardino County).

Some build steps I think we'll have to do:

1. Properly index and install barrel into receiver.
2. Headspace bolt. Maybe do some locking shoulder trading.
3. Install, fit USA parts.
4. Weld(hi-temp silver solder)/blind pin on USA muzzle brake.
5. Refinish firearm (Parkerize, Hot bluing, Gun Kote, etc..)
6. Zero firearm and have a FAL shoot!

My goals are to:

Build two rifles. One being re-parked and then air-brushed with Gun Kote (Satin black). Second rifle hot-blued.

When: to be determined (when all the group buys are done)

Where: to be determined (I may have access to a work area in an Industrial complex, I have to speak to owner/friend)

We have to find out who has what and then what we may need to aquire. Hot bluing/rinse/parkerizing tanks, gas/electric heaters, .308 headspace gauges (go, no-go), abrasive blasting cabinets, air compressors, barrel wrenches, etc etc...

I do have some of the tools/hardware that we need to complete these FALs, but there is also a lot that I don't have.

Redhorse,
I have all the pin guages, Elliot receiver wrench, headspace guages, open end wrench for the barrel, a bitchin' way to machine the barrel shoulder so as to time properly, silver solder and mapp gas, as well as the experience building a few. I also have a couple of different park solutions, and an air brush, plus a stainless park tank and some of John Norrell's moly resin coming in the mail. What I don't have is a blast cabinet (have access to one though) or much time. E-mail me and we'll see what we can set up.

Cool Rule .308, I knew from talking to you at the last SOCAL shoot (WSGC) that you have been building some beautiful FALs. http://www.fnfal.com/forums/smile.gif I like that FAL you had brought over, it is exactly how I want to build one of of these kits into. http://www.fnfal.com/forums/eek.gif

Well I can contribute a blasting cabinet, air compressor(s), airbrushes, etc.. I also stocked up on park checmicals and finishes.

I'll email you and lordtrader later today.

I would love to be part of this. I have never built a FAL before, but will be more than happy to provide whatever is needed in addition to what others are bringing.

Thanks,

Jim

I'm interested in Parkerizing a few. In addition to the tools I have a TIG welder, but it isn't very portable.

I'm in Orange County, and would also be interested. I've never re-finished a firearm before. What would I need to re-do the finish?

If you are going to parkerize it you will need a bead blast cabinet with some 80# aluminum oxide preferably, also a tank, heater, solution, and nuetralizer. If you are going to paint it past that or instead of parking it you'll need the paint (gunkote, moly resin or some other equally good stuff), an airbrush, an oven to cure it in, a good degreaser( acetone, soap and water), and a little compressed air is nice too. I like the idea of Derek's parkote, did you see Barley Pop's new AK? In a word SWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!!

There’s not much we can do right now. Not until the kits and receivers are in our possession. I'll keep you guys updated/questions/requests via email. If you guys would update any of the missing info, I'll have an easier time in contacting you. Shoot me an email if you don't want to post that info on the board. Otherwise, you may miss out on any updates. I'll post general updates to this thread when the info is available.

Here is the list of SOCAL FAL members interested in the build party.

I'm in too. Where are the meets? When we get the kits and receivers I'll definitely want to learn some of the tricks from a pro.

I'm so new to this game I don't have a receiver or kit...YET.

However, I understand that not all kits have benn rec'd, if I can play catchup fast enough, I'm in.

I live in Northern OC.

DId you guys all buy Enterprise? Do they sell directly to the public?

Rule .308
May 16, 2001, 19:18
Yes, Entreprise does sell to the public but they pad the price a little to cover their dealer's interests. The price still isn't that bad, I think someone on the board said they got out the door for around 260-270 for a type three and Lawrence throws the custom serial numbers in for board members for the time being. Unless you find a sympathetic FFL that will order you up a gear logo Imbel from Dealer's Warehouse you'll probably find you are relugated to dealing with Lawrence. What that means is you either buy an Entreprise receiver or a non gear logo Imbel from Entreprise, it could be worse and I am sure will get that way living here in the PRK as we do.

I just sent a SOCAL FAL build party update email (to all that were on my email list) earlier today. That was before seeing this old thread resurrected. :)

I guess it was a good thing too! Lawrence at Entreprise (http://64.70.29.12) must have seen this thread and has graciously offered some assistance/advice/services with the build. What a GUY!

The group build looks good. If you need anything, don't hesitate to let me know. I'll offer any assistance possible. If you guys want, I can inspect barrels for straightness, throat erosion, etc so you guys know what you are starting with. I can also do a general parts inspection and show your group what to look for, how to perform a safety check, etc. After the build party, I can also double check everyones headspace and let you know what it is. All I need is the bolt with the extractor removed, carrier and barreled receiver. Both these services will be offered for free. Just contact me if this helps.

Lawrence

I'm looking forward to your emails, and maybe soon we can set a date for the first build party.

Rule .308 and I have been aquiring a lot of tools over these past several months, anticipating these FAL builds + other projects that both of us have been working on our own. We pretty much have everything we need to finish/assemble these kits, but it would be nice to have a 2nd set of certain tools. Just in case one of us isn't available to make it to some of the build parties ("BP") and if we have a 2nd set of certain tools, things can go a little quicker.

I have a bead blasting cabinet + air compressor, and I will bring it to build parties that I attend (space permitting). So that those that are participate with the BP can use it. We will be instead (at first) be concentrating on the proper assembly of the rifles and worry about refinishing them later. As the refinishing part is very time consumming. We will probably play the BP by ear, so our plans may change. ;)
