View Full Version : Modifiying FAL Safety...

Can the full-auto safety be modified to function as a semi-auto type, such as sold by DS Arms? Does anyone have a drawing or pic of this, or, are any 'smiths doing such a modification and,if so, at what cost?
I recall a thread that talked about installing a pin stop to limit the travel of the safety lever, but I'd prefer to avoid that.

Do you mean instead of replacing the safety selector switch? DSA provides a safety selector switch for $25 that operates with the stop pin that is already integral to my STG-58 receiver. It is shaped to engage the stop pin at the single shot position so that it won't swing to the full auto position (unlike the full auto selector that will travel until the thumb extension of the switch engages the same pin.)
The switch was very easy to replace. It just rotated to a position where it could be pulled from the lower receiver. There were no retaining rings or pins. I don't remember if I had to remove the hammer spring, but that is also very easy to remove. It just pulls out. Very easy. The new selector switch is just as easy to install.

I did this with my acetylene torch, files and derimel tool, then cold blued. The line that looks like a crack in the pic is the edge of the weld, I did not file it all the way flush, works good, looks ok, Vary easy to do.

Sorry, the details in my post weren't quite right. (My memory isn't what I think it used to be!)
The photo above shows the details of the pins on the lower receiver. The DSA selector works exactly the same way as the modified one in the picture. If you have to take this to a gunsmith or a welder to do, you'd probably be better off buying the replacement selector. If you can do this yourself, it looks like a good solution to me!

Yeh....how much Jimbo? I can't stand it when I'm in hot pursuit of a armadillo and flip the safety to auto.

I got one like the selector in the pic with my R-1 kit. I don't know if all R-1's came with it, but I swapped switches with my STG, and now have a semi-only STG lower. The R-1 lower has the pin ground down, so it doesn't matter.

This is what I did. I used a broken drill bit. Drilled a small hole into side of safety. Pressed in hardened pin. Cut to length.
It was a temporary fix until I found a real semi safety. It worked so well that I am going to leave it as is.

Can somebody revive this thread with some pics that actually exist?

This topic keeps coming up. It's not necessary to modify an inch selector at all. Just pull out the external selector stop pin with vise grips and shove in an inch selector. You are done at this point. :D

Here is a picture of one that I modified. I welded a bead on the circular part of the selector, then fitted it using the bench grinder files and the DREMEL!
