I will have two extra m16A1 grips if anybody is in need of one in a few days.
When I get the funds the lower and upper ,charging handle and delta ring are off to victor@usanodizing.com

That is going to be righteous with the A1 lower. They just don't look right on an A2 lower. Lots of folks out there looking for A1 lowers to do retro builds with all the old M16 uppers that have hit the market in the last few years.

Thank You
It cost more to build it this way but to me it is the only way to do it.
I just received the pistol grip today maybe the charging handle tomorrow then it is a big wait for more funds to finish it.

Is that buttstock one of the later ones with the trap doors? That is a really great looking A1 build. I built up one myself, DSA lower-it's an A2 lower so I had to live with the "fence" and other built up areas. I used Brownell's dark park grey spray on finish to match the Colt upper. I got some of Bill Ricca's last Colt A1 pistol grips. It was fun just finding some of the A1 furniture in new condition.

It is a A1 trap door buttstock I know what you mean about finding the parts being fun I still have to come up with a bolt and carrier and HTS, it is the hunt for parts that makes it a pain sometimes but it's all worth it in the end .

August 29, 2006, 19:22
Hey, nothing wrong with building a retro on an A2 lower. I am just a picky bastard.:D

If you have an A1 kit with the trap door stock and foward assist upper then the A1 lower with mag fence is correct. There was plenty of mixing of parts back in the day though, so....

Does Eagle Arms have a web site? I want to see about importing a lower up here to Canada. I keep getting a surplus outfit from PA and the other Eagle that is Armalite.

I'm trying to get an A1 build done and need the lower and P.G.

The lower I have is no longer made it was made pre 1994 Eagle Arms still sells receivers but they are A2 www.eaglefirearms.net

Eagle Arms bought the Armalite name in the mid or late 90's, changed the name from Eagle to capitalize on that historical brand. Armalite re-introduced the Eagle Arms brand so that they could sell stripped receivers and parts while maintaining the "only complete rifles come from Armalite" twist.

That is gonna be a sweet M16A1 clone. I really like it. I know I will get zapped by some here but I do not care, I much prefer the A1 to the A2 for a combat rifle. Lightweight and fast handling . Those sights also do not get knocked out of zero like the A2 can. The A2 is a much better target rifle though and I still own one. But I prefer the A1 in rifle and carbine form for "General Poodle Shootery" to quote WEG. Also these latest incarnations of the M16 are so damned heavy with all the stuff being strapped to them that I do not like carrying them. KISS

I built my self one sans the real A1 lower I wish I could find one, my buddy told me I missed a Sendra Lower at the most recent OKC show. I ended up building my M16A1 on an EA forged lower I also built my GUU/5P clone on a EA forged lower as well. Still I wish anyone but Stag(CMT) would produce an A1 lower. I just can not do that damn deer head. Even if CMT made it for someone else I would buy it. I just want an A1. The funny thing is, back during the Ban I had a PWA A1 lower with an A2 CAR upper and I sold it for $1100.00 I kinda wish I had kept that lower now. Oh well hindsight is 20/20

Sharpshooter, if the Sendra you missed was one of the older Sendras then you didn't miss much. Some of the first ones they made were shotty. However, the later ones were excellent receivers and as good as any.

I too much prefer the A1.

I have heard that my self at different times.

The Sendra I am looking for is one of the Rock Island stamped lowers.

I just built two A1s and am looking for a couple of grips. Please let me know if they're still available and what you'd like to get for them.

I am going the easy route and not refinishing, built mine on STAG lowers. I can live with the deer logo as the qualilty is so good and the price is right, sure would like to find some early lowers though. I used slab side Colt uppers (no forward assist or case deflector) with NIW Colt 1/12 pencil barrels. Also found a couple of bolt carriers w/out the forward assist notches.

Amazing how light and handy these rifles feel with a 20 inch barrel.

Thanks for the contact info on the anodizer, I have a few things that need to be finished.

As for the A1 Sharpshooter, I agree with you 100%.
When the M4 was brand new and no one else had one, I did and it was good. Then when every one else had one, I sold mine and built up my "perfect" carbine. DSA ZM15 lower, Colt slab side Air Force M16 upper, Shaw chrome lined 16" light weight barrel with Colt M4 handguards. (I have large hands and prefer the cooling the twin heat shields give)
I find that it mounts so much faster than the M4 for me, that I prefer iron over trick sights, (I have tried every red dot, Trijicon TA01NSN, ELCAN and on and on) lights, and slings. Just a basic carbine with a four position, old fashioned, non re-enforced coll. stock is what I like and works for me.

About a year ago, there was a guy selling M16 buttstocks and pistolgrips in marketplace. They were the original pre-A1 style in excellent to new condition.

reece, if you are doing an M16A1 clone, the fence is correct. If you are doing a slick side upper M16 clone then the fence may need to go. You said above you were doing an A1 so I thought I'd add that.

Flamehead,
Yeah I typed A1 by mistake, I meant the earlier M16 model.
I have the 3 prong flash eliminator and butt stock and a line on a P.G. now.
Just need a slick side lower.

garandpaul,
I have been following the threads on machining the lower as well, just have to take the plunge I guess.

That was ASA, but they went under.

This is just my MHO, but ASA going chapter 13 was no loss. I know some may argue with me about their quality and goods. But I personally got a bad taste in my mouth from them on more than one occassion and I never forgot it. Even when it looked like they might actually have made an A1 style receiver. I had pretty much decided that I was not going to purchase one.

Looks great. I prefer the A1 to the A2. Carried the older model for the first seven years of my Army career, and then the heavier POS for the last two. Heavier, $hitty sights, and those round handguards suck.

Just one Question. Where did you get that buttstock?
I have an A1 built, but had to settle for a ricketty Ameetek buttstock that just isn't right.

Thanks

P.S. If anybody is looking for an A1 pistol grip, I just saw a few on gunsamericadotcom.

SARCO has listed A1 buttstocks and furniture sets in one of their ads this month.
I'm building an A1/A2 . Personnaly, I see nothing wrong with blending the two. I definitely like the longer A2 buttstock better. I'll use an A1 pistolgrip though.

I'm kind of hoping it will look like this.
I swiped the picture from the "Chicks in Uniform" thread.

Just noticed the round handguards in that picture. The top end I have has the triangular versions. Same upper receiver as on hers though.

Looks great gp. It should be a tack driver as well. The old Colt M16 upper I shoot regularly will do 2 inches at 100yrds all day with surplus ammo, A1 sights and my crummy eyes. It sure is a fun rifle. Almost effortless accuracy is what makes the AR great.

Thanks Guy's
Victor at US anodizing does excellent work I highly recommend him very good person to deal with and a fast turn around .
I hope to shoot this before Oct 23 but it does not look likely I will be having surgery .
Now I need to round up parts for a build for my older brother for a AR15A2 20 in rifle ,Thanks again to Rob for the parts he donated to my build .

Looks great!

What is the difference between an A1 lower vs an A2 lower??

I have that same rifle on a RR lower. Want to get a m16 look alike, one without the bolt assist, slab side lower, and 3 prong FH.

garandpaul
November 09, 2006, 11:23
Thanks Hawk
The A1 has less reinforcements by the pivit pin it is more of a 90 deg and where the receiver ext is screwed in there is less of a built up area there also
