I would like to get one of the IAI pistol grips with the cleaning kit. Do they sell direct or how would I get one?

Try Dan's (http://www.falparts.com/)

Found it under odds and ends. How does it compare to the other US made units? Have you used one? I really like the idea of a cleaning kit using that otherwise wasted space, especially since the FAL has no place for one otherwise.

The cleaning kit is a neat idea but in the case of the p. grip kits, they are a joke in my opinion... I can't imagine cleaning with one of them. Then again, maybe I'm just jealous since my g3 style grip from VOW won't hold one.... nah, I love my grip. I recommend it to anyone who needs a US grip.

I have a couple, they are close to the origional that came off my R1. The one big difference is, these act as a selector stop. They are not cut in a way that will allow the selector to rotate past fire, you cannot make the selector rotate into the FA position. Not bad for this reason either, plus it is a US part. :)
And as said before, the cleaning kit ain't much, but it beats nothing when in the field.

Don't forget to mention that the purchase of this p/grip eliminates the need for a $25 US semi auto only, selector. :-)

Regarding the p/grip cleaning kit, take out the plastic tube thingie and replace it with an Otis cleaning kit for .308. The BEST pull through ever made IMHO.

What's the deal with the semi-selector? I aksed IAI for a PG cleaning kit not knowing it would require a PG change. The other PG allowed the selector to rotate into the auto detent. Was that a no-no? I want to change to a different PG now so I'm curious!

When the selector goes beyond the "Fire" position towards the "full auto", (whether by mistake or deliberately) you'll have a single shot rifle. The "fix" for that was to purchase the DSA semi auto only selector for $25. The recently introduced IAI US p/grip eliminates the problem with the purchase of just the P/grip.

The IAI pistol grip will stop the selector from going past the fire mode. Safe and fire will work fine, the selector will not go to the full auto position (which is a plus, unless you have a full auto FAL). DSA sells a selector which will do the same ($25) or you can convert your selector, but this grip counts as a US part, and keeps the selector in the positions needed. You really do not want to fire a semi-auto with the selector in FA. As Martha Stewart would say, that's not a good thing. :)

I put a IAI Pistol grip on my Imbel kit. Three problems I will note here.

The notch for the slector switch had to be cut out so the selector would drop into the semi detent.

The "keeper" cut for the cleaning kit looks like it had been cut out with a WECSOG dremel tool and the "keeper" for the cleaning doesn't fit properly.

The grip also will not allow the use of the orginal mounting nut. IAI provides a new nut and washer.

Overall, I like the grip and plan on using one on my G1.

I love the Otis kit as well and had planned on using one to fill the space anyway. The "obstruction remover" actually works. Just needed some room to put it in!

I'm using them on 3 rifles. No problem except not being able to use original nut :(

I ordered a bunch of them and am somewhat disappointed. A nice feature is they can take the cleaning kit, a disappointing feature is, as mentioned above, the cut for the cleaning kit spring is in the wrong place and done sloppily - Useless.

The grip is thinner than the StG, but the mould lines are roughtly sanded, requiring blasting for aesthetics.

To use the StG nut or the cleaning kit, you have to turn its diameter down.
