An LEO friend is gearing up to build a FAL and plans to put one of these 1x4 red dots scopes on it. What's the scoop on these?

Meopta is good value and the ones with the illuminated ("K-DOT" is for daylight use) dots are no exception from what I hear.
Is he getting the Artemis or the new Meostar R1 version of the 1-4x22?
Should be good stuff, in either case.

I'm told someone had one of these on a .308 A/R at the Rocky Mtn 3-Gun match at Raton last week and it was getting favorable reviews. Something about the dot getting smaller as you turn up the power, but I'm guessing the dot stays the same size while the target appears bigger?

Anyone know the size of the dot in MOAs?

The dot getting smaller sounds like an optical illusion, if anything.
I haven't shot using one, but looked through a sample at a store. I recall thinking the dot was quite big, several MOA.

I have had one mounted on a .308 FAL for years. (German Reticle)

VERY GOOD GLASS!

Robust!

And, CLEAR!

The K-Dot Will be my next one!

I checked one out at the Rocky Mountain 3-gun shoot in Raton. Mel's buddy, I forgot his name, from Texas, raved about it. I looked through it between stages. It was very bright and had good contrast. The reticle was not cluttered. I think one could adjust for dot brightness, and it was either 1X6 or 1X4 variable. The major problem is how to mount it on the FN FAL. Has anyone figured that out? Easy, T
Mel, If you are out there let me know. Tim

The above vendor ad shows the dot in K-Dot to be 1 MOA and a true 1X power at the low setting. Is there any advantage going with the dot version over the Z-Plex?

ironman0311,

Is the eye relief sufficient to mount it so the eye piece is forward of the rear (iron) sight on a FAL? Do you by chance have a pic of yours mounted on a FAL you could share here or by email?

I finally got to check out the K-Dot.

I ran into my buddy as he was coming out of the Police range next door to where I shoot (and held him at gun point till he showed it to me) :). He has it on a tricked out AR10 and it's really something. Bright, clear optics are an understatement.

The 1 MOA dot is crisp and works whether illuminated or not. It's a little longish (or I'm just used to the Aimpoint) and I'm guessing it has about a 42mm or so rear bell. Supposedly it only weighs 3 OZ more than my Aimpoint Comp ML3. Two eyes open when on 1X was not a problem for me and I'm left eye dominant, but shoot RH.

The neatest part: As you crank up the power to max of 4X, the target gets bigger, but the dot stays 1 MOA. It drips of quality.

Actually not. If the dot "stays the same size" and the target is magnified, the dot no longer covers 1 MOA but less.
If the dot would "grow" with the target (cover same area of the target, in other words), then it would still be 1 MOA at 4x magnification.

It's all relative. The MOA "measurements" of dot size refer to the area of target covered.

stg58guy,

My "perception" is the dot stayed the same size while the target got bigger as I cranked up the power. In terms of MOA relative to the target, I guess your are right. To my eyeball (and brain) it stayed the same size (1 MOA) while the target got 4X closer. So much for brain power. :D In any event it made precise aiming very easy.

Meopta is a Czech company (i think) that used to struggle with quality. They've upgraded quality control, and make a good product. Another company to look at is IOR/Valdada - they use Zeiss glass and have excellent quality. They're one of the (if not THE) largest military optics provider in the world.

SOF gave a very good review last year or so.
