Greetings..
I have before me a most interesting project. I have a Yugoslavian SKS receiver, and a barrel that is blown up. The barrel has on it a flip-up grenade sight, gas shut-off, and a nifty 22mm grenade launcher adapter.
I also have a chinese donor SKS.
I have recovered the front sight (with night sights, even), gas block, grenade launcher and handguard retainer from the Yugo barrel, and all of these things seem to fit real nice on my chinese barrel (I haven't hammered them home yet, but I think they will press down to the right spots, with everything lining up). Problem is, the barrel over times in the receiver quite a bit (both my chinese barrel and my yugo receiver are threaded). I'm afraid it's too far overtimed to peen back into 'spec'. I'm thinking about using a breaching washer. What are the pro's and con's of this? Is there a particular quality or type metal I should use? I was thinking an L1A1 washer would probably work, but is it worth the effort or should I buy a washer at Pep Boys?
The SKS headspaces at the rear, just like the fal, but it's got a square peg instead of a round one like the FAL. Any insight on how to measure headspace? Which way do I drive out the block?
Thanks..
Doug

My guess is a go.and no go gage. But you need some specification. You can try here. http://www.simonov.net/sitemap.htm http://assaultweb.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi

Yeah, I know I'll need head space guages. I was wondering about how to measure the headspace at the locking shoulder..which is square on the SKS, so pins probably won't work. And which way should I drift out the locking shoulder? Anybody?
Oh, and thanks for the Simonov.net reference. I'd been there before, but I had forgotten about the sight. I'll probably find a subject matter expert there.
Thanks..
Doug

If worse comes to worse you can always use your chinese receiver, the Yugo and chinese receivers aren't that noticably different are they? I dunno if I'd feel safe with a breaching washer on an SKS, it may render the headspace uncorrectable, where are you going to find different size locking shoulders? Also I think you may have better luck going with either Russian or Romanian parts to build the Yugo clone than Chinese, the Romanian and Yugo I believe are to the same specs as the Russian, the Chinese seem to be a little different here and there, or else they have very loose tolerances, Never tried to build an SKS, it should be interesting if you get it together, those Yugo SKSs rock, and go in excess of $3000 if original, if you do manage to get it together you're definatly gonna have to post some pics

Part of the reason to use the Yugo receiver is that it will be slightly (however slightly) more 'correct' with the Yugo receiver. Plus, my donor chinese guns don't have servicable receivers.

Well, if it is uncorrectable, it will only be the donor chinese barrel that needs to be replaced. I can live with that. As far as locking shoulders, I'm not sure. I've noticed that they seem to be square, so I was wondering about, a., refiling them 'fal' style, or b., rotating it to a fresh side and filing a new shoulder on it. Plan c might be make a new one all together.

I just happened to have a couple of chopped chinese guns, and the Yugo barrel parts all seem to fit the chinese barrel pretty well. Like, no gunsmithing...just hammer 'em down, and drive the pins in.

Yeah, they are really cool. I don't want to pretend this thing will be a real Yugo, but it should look almost exactly the same. It should take a knowledgable individual to tell the difference. The butt pad on a yugo looks like something off of a hunting rifle, but that should not be hard to duplicate.
I got to fire live rifle grenades off of a few while I was in Yugoslavia.. I have some neat pics, too.
Thanks for the help..
