I'm looking for something first off that does not cost an arm and leg as its taken me 6 years just to save up the money to buy the rifle.
I'd like this optic to be able to place some what precision shoot out at 300 yards. I'd also like this optic to be able to be used in CQB if need be.
Don't even know if anything is out there that might do this at the $400 range.

Do you want magnification? If not, consider the EoTech in that price range. I can't shoot better than 3 MOA with my FAL and the Eotech keeps it in that range at 250 yards for me.
Plus it is very, very, very fast.
If you are looking for 1-2 MOA >100 yards keep looking for something that starts with Leupol and is used.

look for low power variable w/ etched glass reticle and illumination.
If your looking for inexpensive I'm using 1.5x4.5 BSA Cat'seye Illuminated scope on mine and it's holding zero so far and I can it pretty well at 300 with it.
E-bay has some pretty good deals so just keep an eye open.
and good luck :D

At around $400 a Leupold 1.5-5 or 1.75-6 will do just what you want.

A couple of choices here:

The Leupold Compact 3x9x33mm is well below your price requirement and fits your distance needs, but 3x is too much magnification for CQB. A red dot, similar to the one shown on my Imbel, but with 2 MOA dot would be my overall choice.
What's wrong with just using the irons? They fit both needs perfectly, IMO.

Nothing is wrong with the Iron sights at all I know how to use Iron sights very well shot expert twice when I was in the Marines.
Just want to move on to the optics now. I think I just might have to get two optics one for the CQB and the other for the 600+ yard shots.

I use an Aimpoint with the factory ring on my FAL. It is perfect for CQB, shoots minute-of-torso out to 300-400m, and cowitnesses with the iron sights. I cannot think of a better optic.

Eotech if magnification is not important - it's very fast and effective for CQB.
The best scope for the FAL for the money is the Hensoldt at Dan's ammo.
The IOR 1x4 is really nice with the CQB reticle.
I went with a 4x24 Hensoldt from Dan's and an ARMs weaver/stanag adaptor from mounts plus. German milspec tough and the elevation dial is set for 100meter increments.
I like my Loopy VX-III 1.5-5x20 also, but the used Hensoldt in good condition is much cheaper.

RS39,
Can you post a pic of your Hensoldt/FAL setup? I would like to see how high it sets.

I have a Springfield Armory 6x rangefinding scope with internal bubble level. It has a bullet drop compensator calibrated for 168 gr rounds. It was mounted on my 30-06 bolt, but looks new. $250 plus ship if you are interested.

Dan's Hensoldt's are the way to go with the ARMS mount. About 1/4" above the rear sight. You should be able to sell the claw mount, and the scopes are brand new!

Take a look at the Meopta line as well.
GREAT glass.

Tapco weaver cover, ARMS #5, Hensoldt combo, Lyman dial:
.96" from top of rail to bottom of scope tube
.88" from just fwd of the pin stop for the rear sight slide to tube bottom
1.18" tube dia
Run the slide up to max and expect the center of the scope to be 1" higher. With the penguin stock on the Imbel, a set right between the jaw rear and chin sets stable and repeatable.

I have a similar requirement to Blackgrub's. My FAL (DS Arms SA-58, a splendid rifle) will be my main battle rifle for 300-500 yards. (I have a precision bolt-action rifle for engagements beyond that.) But these aging eyes are finding it increasingly difficult to see the target beyond 200-300, so I need an optic with low- to medium-power magnification, yet with as wide a field of view as possible. Don't want to be looking thru a soda straw at 500 yards and totally compromise its CQB capability. Trijicon ACOGs are too expensive, and am also told they are not that robust; the illumination element reportedly gets damaged or separates with rough handling. (?) Do any of you brothers have experience with the new Leupold MR/T scopes? They are a lot more affordable than ACOGs, come at medium-power magnification and with various reticles, also an optional .308 Bullet Drop Compensator. But they aren't cheap either, and I'd be glad of some experienced counsel before I invest. Thanks, FALable

FALable,
I personally shoot a lot better with a good stock to cheek weld requireing a low mounted scope unless I go with a cheek pad. I've had an ACOG TAO1NSN on a flattop AR for years and it's robust and a great scope - nothing better made for the mousegun, IMO.
I tried it on a FAL and (for me) it sits too high, at least without a cheek rest anyway. My group sizes suffered as a result. Others have reported better results. IIRC, Gunplumber mentioned somewhere that the new compact ACOGs will sit lower.

You might check out the Loopy CQT. I have one on an AR and love it. Apparently lots of 3 gun guys are running it. There is a thread on AR15.com right now where the Cav Arms guys and many other 3 gun shooters are speaking of this optic based on personal experiances. It is very informative. It is a very stout optic and runs on AAs.

Thanks, gents. Since I posted my query I've heard from another source about the compact ACOG, which has a lower profile and offers better cheek-weld. I'll check out both your suggestions. Best, FALable

If money's an issue, check out the Burris 3-9 x 40 with the ballistic plex reticle. These can be had for less than $200. I have one on a FAL and it holds zero nicely, and the reticle calibration is right on the money. Its not a fancy scope, but I like mine and its pretty cheap.

I like my Trijicon "Reflex" with the 12.5 moa triangle. Use the point of the triangle for precision longer range shots, and the body for close in quick work. Reflex uses no batteries, available light illuminates the reticle in day, so brightness is controlled automatically with no switches or dials. Tritium does it at night. No batteries, rugged as a solid piece of alumimum, which it is, and clean it by rinsing it in a pond or stream if it gets a mud bath. Quite small and compact, very light, excellent optical quality. Cheaper than an A.C.O.G (although Trijicon now uses that nomenclature on the "Reflex"). No magnification.
FWIW, I have 2 with triangular reticles, and one round dot 4.35 moa. I like the triangular one better.
After trying several others on other FALS, I like the DSA "Extreme Duty" dust cover and A.R.M.S. toggle lever RTZ mount with the Reflex on my Para. All dust cover retaining bolts Loctited of course.
