Hey FAL-o-philes,
I have a CAI FAL that shoots too low. I know that I can fix the problem with an Izzy rear sight, but am unsure how to get the rear sight aperture off. Do I have to remove the entire rear sight base? Any input would be appreciated. Mick

Are you replacing the entire rear sight unit, or just the aperture?

Just the aperture. DSA has them for 20 dollars.

OK.
Remove one of the screws from the lower receiver.
Use a brass punch to drive the assembly off the receiver.
Knock the forward pin out of the slider base.
Push the aperture assembly off the forward end of the slider base.
Watch the little spring and ball detent shoot out in different directions, seeking heretofore unknown hiding places in your workshop.
Swear loudly, and drop the rifle on the floor with a clatter.
Begin search for ball detent and spring.
Ponder over how long it has been since the floor has been cleaned.
Fail to locate the ball detent or the spring.
Get back on the FAL Files and post lengthy account of the incident.
Go to Marketplace forum and find something else to buy.
Eat lunch.
Ad lib from there.

Thanks for the info. Your play by play was very good as well, and I laughed heartily remembering the time I had just bought my first FAL, and was unscrewing the big screw thingy that holds the buttstock on, when all of a sudden.................... Well, you know. Mick

I just sprayed a mouthful of coke on the computer monitor. Not fair to make me laugh so hard this early in the morning. Obviously this photo was "simulated for training purposes". How do I know? There is no skin missing from your nose. Mick

To remove butt spring.
clamp lower in padded vise
start to unscrew end nut
place leather glove on left hand
insert screw driver between thunb and fore finger of left hand
cover end of butt with left hand and finish unscrewing
catch spring with gloved hand carefully

It wasn't too long after I discovered that someone more clever than me made an actual tool for installation and removal of said buttstock. Needless to say I got one.
Thanks for the quick tour of Baghdad, Andy C. Good stuff. Mick
