I have a sa build I just completed. would replacing the standard sight wtih a hooded one be a good idea on a general purpose rifle, or would the accuracy gain be minimal.....
I just don't know the differnce in hold id between the two sights
thanks

I have the hooded rear sight on my rifle, I cant say it is more accurate than the original as I never used the original rear sight when shooting.
The sight hood does seem to reduce glare from the back of the sight.
FWIW, The sight apture still wobbles.
Hope this helps

During the noon day sun, I found that the hooded rear sight gave off a halo effect which severely distracted my attention.
I thought that was what the hood was supposed to prevent! :?
Needless to say , I replaced it with the original and have had no further issues. The hooded rear sight may be an 'improvement' for benchshooters, but I found no benifit from it for a fighting rifle. YMMV.

I wouldn't say it was all that awful, but I found that I like it much better since I took the dremel to it and cut it down and stoned it by almost 2/3rds. Previously, it was like tunnel-vision and hard to acquire the front sight. I never shot my rifle with an original sight.

I used to have a hooded rear sight. The damn thing scratched my shooting glasses all to hell under recoil. Had to have it at the 400yd setting to get it far enough away from my glasses to prevent the scratching. Needless to say that didn't work and I replaced it with a regular one.

If you have the tools, a guy at the shop I hang at drilled and tapped his to take a small allen bolt that he screwed into the aperature then drilled several of these small bolts with different aperature sizes. He just uses an allen key to change aperatures for different shooting conditions and the small bolts aren't as big and obnoxios as a target hood but offer some benefit.
Just a slick option that I'm considering.

That's a great idea.
I epoxied a small flat disc on the back of the long range leaf on my AR-15's rear sight and drilled a suitably small hole in it to get better precision.
Allen screws would do the same thing but would allow easy interchangeability and the mini-hood is just an added bonus.

they come in all sorts of sizes and are cheap enough to mod them yourself with a pin drill... They are brass so easy to drill/work with.

If your rear sight has lateral play, take it off and squeeze it (carefully!) in a vise. A snug fit can make a big difference in accuracy. You might want to have a spare handy as it's easy to ruin one by doing this. (AMHIK).
I tried one of the DSA hooded apatures and it did give me a slightly more precise sight picture. However, the reduced field of view made it less than desirable for me. Slower target acquisition more than offset any other benefit. Tactical Tim has one on his 3-Gun FALs and preferrs them over the standard sight so YMMV from mine.

I agree with MichonRAFW about the DSA hooded sight scratching my safety glasses. I'm glad Rudy Project has a scratch replacement warrenty. I did cut my hood down to about half the length, but still have to be somewhat careful about my eye relief. I do like the clarity of the sight though.
