Here's a couple of pics of some armourers repairs to both butts & handguards.

note the importance that there is a gap at the point's indicated in the butt picture 'A', 'B' & 'C' again this fact should be taken on board by those who are making or fitting butts which don't have a metal ferrule. It is at these points the butt will crack.

Kevin, what do the slip patches do? My R3 stock has two that I thought were just for cosmetics. It also had the rear half of the hump replaced. I refinished and it looks new.

Slip patches are inserted to stop cracks / splits from lengthing. The patches are inserted across the grain of the timber, doing this is will stop, or slow the spreading of the crack / split. Extending the operational life of the butt or handguard.
