I have an Izzy buttstock that I had to sand to remove a gouge. Anyone know how to match the original finish?

I used Golden Oak stain and BLO. Worked real great, matched the HG perfect.

I have been using spray on poly urethane - seems to be an exact match... bu then again, wood isn't my forte

I don't find the original Israeli wood finish necessarily worth duplicating unless you are trying to make a replica. If that's your goal just apply some spray poly. Chestnut Ridge military stain followed by BLO makes a nice looking finish. Don't go too heavy on the stain. It's kind of reddish, borderline purple when applied too heavily.

I did some clean up work on an Izzy stock by mixing a can of Minwax gloden oak stain and a pint of Homer Formsby satin finish tung oil. Buff the stain/tung oil onto the stock with 0000 steel wool using a small circular motion. I put 6 coats on mine and it gave the wood a very smooth, deep finish.
