Patent Pending.
This is the BarrySuperhawk Patented rear sight base Optima mount.
The dot ends up just above the front sight. This is my second attempt, the first was about .250 higher. I still have another rear sight base and some weaver rail, so I am going to see just how low I can go with #3...
Second Generation.

I took it to the range and it works flawlessly. This is about the most natural pointing gun/sight combination I have ever worked with. 3gun here I come...
Note, these pictures were taken "in the white" as I didn't want to bother with bluing these if they didn't work...

since you are the only guy to have looked, it seems, what do you think?

I like it, looks very light and since it's so close to your eye, would be quick pointing.....only concern as a engineer is the hardiness of the mount/base?
But I assume this is not designed as a battlefield tank type of design?
pretty innovative idea though......way to go

The mount itself is every bit as durable as the rear sight assembly as I welded a section of weaver rail directly to a cut down sight base. The weak point has to be the dovetail/windage screws.
As far as the sight itself, well, it's an Optima, all plastic and not real sturdy, but I have 2 of them, so I have a backup JIC. I imagine a Firepoint/Jpoint/Docter would be more durable, being made of metal and glass. They even make a mount with wings on it about like a para rear sight. The only issue there is it's aluminum, and not weldable. I don't think this assembly would be quite as durable if it were screwed or glued..
The whole reason I started with this idea is speed. in a head to head test, I cut 4 seconds off my personal best rifle standards time [10 seconds with my new optima vs 14 seconds for Irons, 15 seconds for a Dustcover mounted dot, 18 seconds for a 10x scope]
The best part is, in true WECSOG tradition, I have bled on this project, not once but twice, and burned myself once...:)

hehehe, well keep at it,....one day you might even lop of a finger.
I looked at getting a doctor red dot, but found them discontinued every place I looked.
Looks like you might need a patent attorney now?

why not extend the base out on the sides and design a hood to cover the sight ala eotec style? lil bit of engineered protection?
so far it looks pretty cool!

The biggest problem I face right now is the mount. My plan is to machine out a u shaped mount with ears, but finding suitable base stock is challenging, considering how precise the base has to be. I can't build a cover because this style of sight relies upon light hitting it. The best I can do is ears... Stay tuned, more to come.

I like it. With protective ears, I bet you could sell some.

Sell them? No. I may sell the prototypes, or even the manufacturing rights, but I am not a manufacturer, and have no desire to become one. The Grenadier Precision Scope mount saga cured me of any desire to manufacture anything for anyone else. I might sell things I physically possess, but never anything that has yet to be made..

If you coud mount on a picatinny would it co witness?
:?

Look at the pictures again, it IS mounted on picatinny, and there isn't really anything to co-witness with because the mount I fabricated replaces the rear sight. It ended up about .250 higher than if I had put it on the dust cover, but my Gen 3 mount [in process] should get most of that back. My plan is to attach the sight directly to the [new] base, eliminating the rail and the original mount, gaining almost .350 in the process. Currently the notch in the rear of the dot works as a very crude rear sight [in case of failure] OR the whole assembly works like a super oversized ghost ring...
