Are inch and metric gas pistons the same? I have a spare inch gas piston, but no inch rifle (don't ask.....doh). I compared it to a metric one and they appear similar. I was going to measure one with calipers but I figured it was easier to ask.

187,

They are the same. The only ones that are different are the Izzy's.

I thought they were the same too untill the
other night messing around I put an original
L1A1 piston in a G1 and the plug won't go in if the carrier is all the way up.Measured and
sure enough L1A1 is longer.Metric fits inch
but not vise-versa.

But with a shorter metric in an inch gun are you asking for reliability problems?

That is not what I found. I am using a L1A1 gas piston in my R-1 with a Argitine barrel, functions great. I just checked the L1A1 piston in the G-1 barrel and it fits. The end is flush with the receiver stub. I wonder why yours does not fit???

No clue,I only had the one that came in the
G-1 kit and its the same length as the DSA.
All my L1's are longer,Aussie and Brit.I've
got 5.Could be there is a slight difference
in the G-1 plug length. The DSA works fine in
my inch rifles. And somebody else wanted the
G-1 more than I but when I get it back to
carbine it I'll get some exact lengths.

I wonder if it could be a gas block or gas plug difference? I seem to remember that early FAL's had differnt gas plugs, but I don't know if this would make a difference.
