does this stuff have any nutritional value? i saw some today and i've heard you have to be an aussie to be able to consume it. just wondering if it has any place in food storage or in the pantry in general.

When I was a young, good looking, and healthy stud, I dated a model fresh from Australia who LOVED vegemite on crackers. To me, it smelled like baby poo, looked like baby poo, and tasted like nothing I have ever had since. NASTY!
She would down a tin of the stuff in nothing flat with a Michelob Dark (remember that beer?) and a sleeve of water crackers.
Again, NASTY !!

Yep it's horrible stuff, New Zealand Marmite is a lot better
Generally vegemite and Marmite are a great source of B vitamins and can be used to make gravy or to have on toast, crackers or simply to eat out of the jar. New Zealand and Australian kids are brought up on the stuff so we have a good tolerance for the stuff.
Marmite
Marmite is New Zealand’s original yeast spread that’s been long valued as an excellent source of B complex vitamins, folate and vitamin B12. It’s the original yeast spread with iron. Try Marmite with avocado on hot toast, bread or crackers. And for a tasty addition, add Marmite to stir-fries, pasta and soups.

You guys have no idear what you are missing. PAY NO ATTENTION to NZ L1A1 Kev is a KIWI and therefore only interested in sheep.
Vegemite on toast for breakfast, Vegemite and cheese on fresh bread for lunch. Vegemite in your soup or as a gravy. Nothing better. Its loaded with good stuff. And if you are really stuck you can use it for axle grease.
Better not to ask whats in it. what dosent kill you makes you stronger.
Now i'm hungry after all this talk of vegemite.

Vegemite is fuckin gross.
For all those who haven't tried it, it is salty yeast, like a yeast infection. Yuck.
But then we have peanut butter, WTF is that about?

Have you ever made or drank homebrewed beer? Remember the layer of yeast sediment on the bottom of the carboy, bucket or in the bottle? Well, there you go...............Think of spreading that on toast or crackers and you've got vegemite.

+1 for Marmite or Bovril, which is a beef extract.

But not just ANY old yeast:
A German chemist named Liebig discovered that the waste of yeast used in brewing beer could be self-digested and made into a concentrate, resulting in a protien-rich paste (some would say "sludge") with a more or less meaty flavor.
Some of the yeast extract used in British Marmite comes from Bass's brewery in Burton-on-Trent, and the rest is from various other breweries in the area. (The breweries pay Marmite to remove the yeast from their factories.)

Vegimite is ok, Promite is better.... ;) Same consistancy (axle greese) but more subtle flavour. The biggest mistake that all of you in the "other" hemisphere make is to spread it on waaaaaay too thick. Just tease the toast (or cracker) with tghe stuff and you will have enough on there.
Lots of vitamins and such in the black death, only they are not much use to you if your "girly man" stomachs can't keep it down.....

If the Poms use Bass Brewery's yeast, do they tap into Foster's dregs to make Vegimite in Oz?

Try the gourmet stores like "Le Gourmet Chef" for Marmite, thats where I get mine.
Seconded about it having a strong flavour, use less! Butter a muffin & the smear a little over the melted butter,(drool, drool!) I'm actually salivating, damn!
Add a big teaspoon of it to a pot of stew, & taste the difference.
Once you start looking into what foods are made of you will quickly stop eating just about everything! Just do the "Iff it feels good then do it!" thing.
I think (based on the posts) that very few of the files members are strict temperence, but look into how wine, beer, & hard liqour are made & you'll quit drinking.
Likewise how many of you put tartar sauce on fish, or use cream of tartar?
Its the hard, dry, crusty, crud that forms on the inside of wine barrels, it looks like dollops of lime scum, or stalagmites, is inedible & tastes like garbage if you try. But guess what, clean up the image a little, mush it in with some kind of mayonaise substitute, & there you are, a delicacy.
I've never tried Vegimite (because I've never found it in the UK or US), but if I can find some I will. I assume it is similar to Marmite, but don't have a direct comparison.
BTW. How do those of you with Aussie, NZ, or Brit girlfriends know for sure you haven't tried it? You can cook with the stuff!!!

First I knew about it was when suppliers rang and said they could no longer send things via Australia post. I was then faxed the leaked copy of the internal letter from Australia Post. Hope you have nothing on the way from outside of OZ.
A few of us Surplus shops have tried to find out more info from the Postal service and the minister but what an absolute waste of effort that was. We have been to a lawyer and are waiting on his relpy.
Even if you have customs permits Aus post will not see them as valid.
This includes bayonets and other "weapons" Does that mean my cricket bat is now illegal to mail????
There goes my whole export business down the drain. not to mention importing. Yes I could use private couriers like TNT but that will triple the price of postage.

Its funny that this thread is going the way it is, concidering which forum it is in!
Or am I the only one seeing this?
Marmite/Vegimite are commercially available, packaged foods. Bearing that in mind, I assume that vegimite is not hazardous to the health, I know Marmite isn't.
Yet here we have a group of people who are interested in surviving, or being prepared for all kinds of disasters, and the whole debate is raging on!
I find myself wondering how long some of us would survive a real disaster situation, when this is such a hotly debated point?
The discussion seems to be breaking into 2 opposite groups. One being those that will (or have) eaten just about anything known to be non-poisonous, and those that won't even concider anything other than standardized, acceptable, normal,Western European diet items.
In a way I'd like to see the reactions of some of these survival proponents when faced with a choice I was given during a survival course when we were told we could have the worm omlette 2 ways, with, or without the eggs. (I picked without, tastes kind of like meaty spaghetti with very little sauce.)
I saw a show promoting survival foods the other day on the idiot box where the diet item was earthworms. They were caught, starved for a day to void the gut & then burnt to a crisp before being eaten. God that must have been horrible, they are much better when adequately cooked, but left with some juice.
I,ve eaten Hotchi-Witchi (Baked Hedgehog, rolled in a clay ball & shoved into the bottom of a campfire), dead, raw fish, (Sushi), Earthworm, Horsemeat, ostrich egg (from a legal supplier), groundhog, and a bunch of other things that would make the "Girly Man" stomach heave, & guess what, most of it tasted pretty good!
I'm noticing that the US pallete seems to be divided into 2 camps, bland & blander, or really spicy (like chilli).
I'm frequently trying to be tricked by people who will give me some kind of "mystery meat" and being told what it is after having eaten it. I guess the expectation is that I'll be worshipping the porcelain deity shortly. My thought is that I've eaten ( & maybe liked it) so why in the hell should I get sick only after being told what the "Rocky Mountain Oysters" were?
Having done this rant I'll admit there are some tastes I prefer over others, & some I'd rather not repeat, but given the supposed mind-set of this forum I'm amazed by how weak stomached, and closed minded a lot of the contributors are!

Come on down here, Australia is one of the few nations that actually eat the animals on it's Coat of Arms (being kangaroo and Emu), this would be akin to y'all having a roast Bald Eagle. Now Australia Day was the 26th of this month. A BBQ is the done thing, ours consisted of a few steaks, some marinated chicken as well as Kangaroo, Emu and Crocodile sausages. If it tastes good eat it I say......I will have a bite at anything (almost) it's wether I have the second bite that is telling..... ;)

Vegemite tastes bad in my opinion. I was just in Australia and had some there. The guys I work with ordered it at breakfast just to see me eat it. I tasted it and didn't like it. It just tasted very dif than what I was accustomed to eating. If it was all there was I'm sure I could learn to like it.
I have seen Ausy expats crave it and when they get a bottle from a friend they down it in one sitting.
On Beer, Fosters is Piss water there. VB has its lovers and haters. I liked it but I was under a lot of stress then.
I did see my friend Todd eat a bottle of it on bread in Munich. He had been there about a year. He took me to the "footy" game in Melborne while I was there. We could not talk the next day because of all the screeming the night before.
If you can ever get to Australia do it. The folks are nice and the men are still men and the ladies, well are still ladies

Marmite needs to be applied THICK.
Thin is just not enough flavour...Needs to be on the edge of triggering an involuntary cough..mm mmm good.
The long suffering wife buys it for me from the online grocer...That and Colemans mustard and pickled onions...
Actually managed to get the wife to try Marmite one time...And that was it, thought she was gonna really throw...She was not best pleased.
Vegemite is just weakish Marmite....Get the Marmite...Once you go black you never go...well you know....
Nutritionwise it is mostly B vitamins and not a lot else.
Cheers

Now Australia Day was the 26th of this month. A BBQ is the done thing, ours consisted of a few steaks, some marinated chicken as well as Kangaroo, Emu and Crocodile sausages. If it tastes good eat it I say......I will have a bite at anything (almost) it's wether I have the second bite that is telling..... ;)
Being from Canada I'll have you know we eat Beaver every chance we get (not the rodent kind!) but we won't touch Vegimite!
Vegimite is just the Aussie name for Cosmoline!

What next ...just posted on the Aus Post website, a link to the official release and definitions of "firearm parts". Not as bad as I had expected and most things I will/would order from overseas are ok. Still....thin end of the wedge if you as me.

I have tried both Marmite and Vegemite. Both are dreadful!
I find Marmite to be slightly worse and think it could be used to make a goat puke.
My opinion.
Best regards,

Have I confused Homeland Security?
Somewhere deep in the bowels of a federal building are there guys in spacesuits?
Are they prodding dubiously at a mystery jar of strange smelling black goop?
Do they think because the salivate at the smell it must be a nerve agent?
Enquiring minds want to know!
Or did the jar not get mailed?
Just curious.:?

why not a BIG jar? i finished the marmite week before last and hadn't been able to get to the world market to get more. i was standing there looking at the vegemite and marmite, and i decided to try vegemite this time (because it was $2.50 cheaper). i like it better i think. it tastes about the same and it's easier to spread.

Sniper 40 was going to send some Vegimite over. I'm wondering if it's stuck in customs somewhere, because they can't figure out what the heck it is!
Having grown up in England I'm familiar with Marmite, but have never been able to find Vegimite to compare. Now I find there's another one called Promite!
Then this morning I go into work & there's 2 small restaurant-sized packets on my desk. One Vegimite & One Marmite!
One of my buddies at work just got back from a vacation in N.Z. & thought it would be a cute gag to bring these as "souveniers".
Then I get home & we're out of muffins!
I'll do a "range report" after I get some toast cooked up.
Meanwhile everyone that passes my desk is asking me why I have 2 packets of grease there!
Maybe there's a souvenier busines for an enterprising guy from down under, making T-shirts that say " My buddy went all the way to New Zealand, and all I got was this lousy sachet of "Vegimite!"

Vegimite Vs. Marmite range report (as promised)
OK I broke down & ate the lot!
The wife (looking dubiously at the packages from NZ) announced we had english muffins. Not being sure if there was any such thing as a NZ muffin?
I proceeded to to the taste test.
Toasted light golden brown, slathered with lots of butter: UhOh there goes another artery:rolleyes: Ripped open the packets I was going to take pics of & liberally dolloped & smeared.
The packs were just about right to get a double muffin load each out of.
At this point the wife's right eyebrow dissapeared into her hairline.
"Are you really, really going to eat that stuff?"
"Oh Yeah, baby!"
Instant gag reflex, not from me but from the missus! She got a whiff of the hot, steaming brown & black stuff & had to leave the table.
Right after I ate both the muffins & confess I licked the left over that I couldn't get out of the packets.
Darn it. I prefer the vegimite! (which is, of course totally unavailable in the US as far as I know!)
A little less salty, & with not so much of an aftertaste.
Oh boy I've missed my wierd Non-US foodstuffs.

World Market has both. Also might want to try Fresh Market (if you have either in your area).

Hey, thanks Mike. How much more room ya got? I have a twenty Quid note that's been in my wallet since '97.
Hey It's almost worth the 20, now the pound is doing so well!
I had a visit this weekend from some long-lost family members from the UK.
So I opened the jar of Promite from Andy The Aussie!
We had 3 older Brits(including me) 3 US, & a bunch of kids (and the golden retreiver)
Funny thing the guys& gals from the UK went nuts, as they'd missed it after only being in the US for a week.
Just about everyone else was just shocked when we cooked up a whole pack of mufins & went at it.
Best line of the day was from a "Drama Queen" of almost 12 years.
"Oh! is that stuff why all you old people smell so bad?"
Meanwhile the dog, who isn't spoilt at all by his mother, was slobbering all over the cap to the jar. So we had to eat the lot. Strictly for reasons of hygene, of course!:]
"Oh! is that stuff why all you old people smell so bad?"
Hahaha! I can relate - my wife refuses to kiss me after I've been digging into my jar of Marmite
Is this the stuff that comes out of a Vegematic?

That crap is so salty you could use it to preserve hides! As far as actually ingesting it, I don't think so!
