My Dear old Mother called the otherday, in a bit of a titter, after watching Oprah's show on the bird flu. She informed me that I needed to get some good face masks for the entire family. So what is the best face mask and where do I get them? Thanks, Mike

Depends on why you want them.

If they're just to alleviate your mother's concern, buy a box of dust/particle masks (likely what she saw on TV) and send her a picture of you and your family with them on.

If you are serious and believe that you will somehow get enough notice BEFORE you need them so as to be useful, you will need NBC gear for the family, which is expensive uncomfortable and impractical.

IMHO and YMMV,

eh.. bird flu, shmird flu. The white house wants to a: scare the sheeple, b: give you something to do to feel prepared. theres no bird flu here in the USA yet, and unless it breaks out to epidemic levels, you arent going to wear a mask. how many days does it take between infection and symptoms.. we all know that you are most contagious BEFORE you have symptoms. Are you going to start actually Wearing that paper mask around town? didnt think so.

a few bucks spent on supplies here and there ,that you can use
any way in the future doesnt seem like a big deal .
i would rather buy stuff now when the shelf's are full ,then if something
does happen and everyone is trying to grab stuff off the shelf

I agree wholeheartedly. Take a few minutes to read my article on how to prepare for a flu pandemic: http://www.survivalblog.com/asianflu.html

yup
"Because why not?" and "He keeps N95 masks around the house for doing odd jobs."
As do I

I too would use them in case of some crazy outbreak, but I'm not going to be stocking up on them just for that reason. I'll continue to purchase them for working around the house and what not.

Anyway, you cancontinue to wear your masks all day, every day as that's the only way to protect your self from the bird flu. Or you can go to your cabin and become a hermit.

I ordered both types for my wife and I around the 1st week of December to beat the rush. The standard type came quickly but the N95 was supposed to be 2 weeks later. They finally arrived last week. The rush started when the CDC recommended them and it has only gotten worse. Total cost for both was $30. Odds are I can go through life and never suffer a home invasion but I lock my doors and windows and sleep with my peace keeper on the night stand. The masks cost less but I'd venture to say those who tell us it is silly to buy them also sleep with a firearm in the house for protection. Perception of threat I guess.
