I dunno.
I was remarking the fact that it was in the news AT ALL....and even more surprising WITHOUT being portrayed as "milita nutjobs" or some similar libel/slander.

I think the news media is coming around to the fact that people should/must prepare.
I hope so anyway.

Texas Officers Involved in Standoff at Border
Tuesday, January 24, 2006

Associated Press

SIERRA BLANCA, Texas — Men dressed as Mexican Army soldiers, apparent drug suspects and Texas law enforcement officers faced off on the U.S. side of the Rio Grande, an FBI spokeswoman said Tuesday. Andrea Simmons, an agency spokeswoman in El Paso, told The Associated Press that Texas Department of Public Safety troopers chased three SUVs, believing they were carrying drugs, to the banks of the Rio Grande during Monday's incident. Men dressed in Mexican military uniforms or camouflage were on the U.S. side of the border in Texas, she said.

...but wait, there's more....

Chief Deputy Mike Doyal of the Hudspeth County Sheriff's Department told the newspaper that Border Patrol agents called for backup and were joined by Hudspeth County deputies and DPS troopers. Mexican army personnel had several mounted machine guns on the ground more than 200 yards inside the U.S. border, the newspaper said.

''It's an explosive situation," said Becky Dean-Parker, a Hudspeth County judge and local rancher. ''This is the second major incident where people with military-type uniforms and weaponry came in the defense of drug loads. We are very, very concerned because all it would take is one person to pull the trigger and it's going to be a disaster."

Investigation ordered

Mexico's secretary of defense has ordered a full investigation into the incident. However, Rafael Laveaga, a spokesman for the Mexican Embassy in Washington, D.C., said he does not think the men in military fatigues seen escorting the traffickers were soldiers. The Mexican military installation in Ciudad Juarez, which is nearest to where the incident occurred, does not have any vehicles or weapons like those described by the Hudspeth County sheriff's deputies, he said.

''We strongly deny that members of the Mexican army participated in any incident at the Mexican-U.S. border," Laveaga said. ''I think it's fair to say that criminal organizations sometimes wear military uniforms and use military vehicles to provide confusion among authorities of both countries."

Still, Washington is demanding answers.

Kristi M. Clemens, assistant commissioner for U.S. customs and border protection, issued a statement saying the agency is reviewing the confrontation and has asked the Mexican government for a ''thorough investigation."

"Criminal networks present a serious threat to border security and their lawlessness is not going unchecked," she said.

Talk ... Talk ... Talk ... Blah ... Blah ... Blah ...

That is all they ever do... Deploy the guard to the borders and these incidents will end rather quickly, espcially if they use light armored formations and gunships... Set up ambushes on the suspected routes and use lethal force to settle the issues...

Set up ambushes? Use lethal force? We can't do THAT! Why, the rest of the world would view us as "extreme" and lacking sensitivity to those poor individuals who are forced by life's travails into smuggling across our borders.

Cindy Sheehan herself might have to drop everything and rush down to the border and do a campout or something! And, Lord knows, Cindy's schedule if probably already full!
