Just to give you my experience with scopes and fal's.

Imbel build....pretty much a very accurate rifle with standard sights. Found a scope mount......Leatherwood???

As my eyes are getting old, I wanted a pretty strong powered scope...but then again......I am cheap. So I bought a Simmons 44mag 6.5 x 20 scope with target turrents, adjustable objective. This thing is HUGE!!

Looked around town....(did I tell you I get impatient as well) for a weaver mount...that would be high enough to clear the objective bell and maybe the rear stock sight.

Found Leopold (high) see through mounts.....tried them. They cleared the bell, but still had to remove the rear sight.

At the range, I sighted it in at 30 meters. On paper first shot..adjusted and they will start to cloverleaf....a lot of 2 into 1 hole. Once adjusted, I dialed up the power to see if POA moved..........NOPE. Did I tell you this scope is CLEAR as a bell?? I think its clearer then my Leopold VX11 3 x 9!! At full power, I could read the writing on the target

Anyway, its a cheap way to go if you are so inclined.....scope cost app. $99, rings were app $17, gave app. $20 for the mount (not a Tapco). Can't wait to get to the 300 yard range and dial her in!!!

Sig I've done basically the same thing with great results. I'm using a Winchester 6.5~20x50 on mine. I went with a combination of high rings and an 1" tall M16 see thru riser. The picture isn't that great but here she is. I need to hook up with someone here who has access to the long distance range at Ben Avery to get beyond 200 yards. Right now my groups are under an inch with my own loads.

I think it depends what you are setting it up to do.

ARMS mount with Reflex II or lightweight scope close to the barrel would seem to be a nice handling combination.

For long range work, how about a DSA Extreme Duty Mount, and a 3x12x42 or 50?

Bigger, heavier and higher the scope, more recoil, wear and tear comes into play. Right fellas?

I just never have like the looks of the DSA scope mount. I have a "springfield" mount on my other full size Fal. It sports a non illuminated 3X9 ncstar scope.....one of the ones that is like 8 inches long. It too will impress you with its clarity.

The scope mount on the Imbel is built similar to the DSA, but has hex screws that tighten the mount on the sides. Seems to be a little less bulky then the DSA. The Springfield mount uses allen head screws on the bottom edge of the upper to tighten it. I would have just swapped the mount across, but there is not clearance for the horozontal takedown lever on the Springfield mount.

As for what I wanted to accomplish.......who knows???? I plan to shoot some metal with it at 300 meters........maybe put it on some hogs in a couple of weeks. I should be able to count thier eye lashes with this scope!!!

How do you like the cheek weld? The only scoped one I've had experience with had the scope mounted as close to the mount as possible. Do you see advantages/disadvantages either way?
Thanks

Well, so far I am thrilled!!! I have only had the time to take it out once for about 40 rounds on a 30 meter range. Then between bad windy weather and work, I have not had the chance to take it out again.

The cheek weld is comfortable....the bottom of the bell is just a little lower then the rear sight would have been....so maybe 3/4 of an inch higher then stock.

As for as advantages.........powers up to 20X!!! Once I am happy with it at range, I will remove the scope and mount to check it for return to zero....don't expect any problems, though.

Disadvantages is it will not be very fast in a "throw it up and shoot" contest. Field of view is lessoned somewhat, but....unless the pigs attack my flanks in hordes it would be okay!!

Weather was better today.....but stayed at work late.....tomorrow...maybe but still have to work until who knows when.....its killing me not to let it stretch its legs!!

AZPatriot, I would need a big pillow to get a cheek weld on that rig of yours. I mounted the scope as low as I could....hence had to remove the rear sight!!

But its like opinions, everyone has one......you may not like mine:tongue:
