Just some simple statistics for a post-TEOTWAWKI. I will use Idaho as an example because it is often lauded as a great get out of dodge/move to now destination:
Deer Population 300,000 (source: Idaho Fish and Game)
People Population 1,393,000 (source: US Census Bureau)
Eat up while it lasts. It wouldn't take long to run through the Deer, Elk, Bear, Bird, Dog, Cat, etc.
My point is buy some food and store it.
A side note, people that leave their house in a time of crisis to go somewhere safer to get food and water are called...Refugees.

I think that 300,000 figure is grossly under-estimated. Nez Perce co. probably has that alone. And don't forget the cattle....
Also, a significant portion of the population is not capable of killing deer except with a car. The trick is to get around several herds, kill off the other predators and guard them from other hunters. Idaho also has a huge population of elk and moose, that in some areas probably outnumber the deer. There is also a substantial population of mt goats, and some bighorn. It doesn't take a huge herd to create enough surplus offspring to feed a small group of people.
Anything with carbs would be highly sought after as well. If you have property with sluggish water I'd suggest wapato. Same as a potato, but needs no agricultural maintenence outside of the way it is harvested, and reproduces rapidly. The bulbs will store for long periods underground w/o prep.

Now, if we could just keep the Utards and Californicators away, hunting would be more enjoyable and a LOT SAFER!
