View Full Version : How to get melted rubber off barrel?
March 23, 2002, 23:15
Well my barrel got REALLY HOT and my brain-dead friend was not paying attention and set it down on somone's rubber shooting rest  and melted a thick black coat to the bottom of my barrel!
How can i get this stuff off without taking off the park or scratching it?

Heat got it messed up, heat should get it off. Try melting it off with fire. Once Parked correctly adding a small match's worth of heat should not affect the Parking, also no scratches.

try melting with judicious amounts of propane torch, it should burn off. check your e-mail if you haven't already.

In case you're reluctant to use heat I've found that gasoline will lift most rubber from a different surface.

If you haven't already charred it with a torch :o try some acetone. It that doesn't do it a good paint stripper should take it off.
Just remember that acetone is very flamable and use good gloves with the paint stripper.

MEK would probably take it off without using heat, might take a little elbow grease.

Hey try the best of both worlds...with Acetone dripping off the bbl. add 1 match! Just be sure that your garage is insured and you are wearing you Nomex bunny suit.
Just remember if you take the rubber off your barrel you will have no protection from shooting transmitted diseases.

Cold. Get it real cold, then pull the rubber off or it will chip(flake) off. We do it with hot asphalt. After it gets cool it pulls or chip off most stuff it was stuck on

Good advice guys. I may need it when I melt my bedlined handguards this weekend. Hopefully not!

at least you were safe when you were with the barrel.......are we talking about the same thing here??
seriously like mike said MEK will do it. JP-8 will too, but may be hard to get for you. Jet-A is the same stuff ;)

Wait until its flacid and slide it off. But make sure to keep the end closed.
