I played hooky for the afternoon and headed into the PJ and roller chop to try and fill a cow elk tag. For the PG, I carried a 1873 Springfield with a Rem 600 on my back. While slinking along, I spotted a really red clump across a draw from me. It was so red that I discarded my original thought of another beetle killed pinion. I slinked a bit more and discovered it was a sleeping young bull. I was about 70 yards and really would have liked that shot!
I circled back and discovered fresh cow tracks across my trail*^%%^$$.
I spotted a couple beasts way off and drove, then slinked to them. Rem 700 in 300 mag for this set up. Two more bulls, big this time. I actually drove past them slowly and they stood at 150 yds without taking off. Now this never happens when I'm hunting bulls.
I then hit the roller chop and cut a small amount of sign from the truck. I slinked into the setting sun and can only see the silhouettes...one was another big bull, the rest were probably cows but the sun was so bad I couldn't tell.
It was fun. I love to hunt in the PJ's and snow is almost like cheating.
The end.
