have a trilux mount with the locating/locking tabs on the back of it. Would like to use it on my metric receiver.
If I cut off the tabs and the mount fits exactly with no visible slop...what have I missed?
Is it better to have a 'smith' grind slots in the receiver for the tabs? If there is no slop with the tabs gone have I compromised something else?

Cheers

No dont grind on the receiver.. Dont even think of it.
It is very easy to remove the two lil tabs with a dremel tool.
I removed mine and the cover fit very tight anyway.
There was some one here who had one that he had removed the ears and he wanted one that was original...cant think of his name, but you might post a WTT on the market place.
It is easy to remove them tho.
The tabs are actually extra metal folder over..just remove the extra on the front and you will be fine. Mine fell off after I had cut the fold.

Seconded! cut the top cover, not the reciever. The "tabs" were to allow the use of stripper clips. To do that the stripper clip dust cover did not extend all the way to the front of the upper, so the tabs were needed to stop it slipping foreward under recoil. Once added, they were never removed.
I did exactly this by grinding up from the base towards the long lip, being real carefull to stop in time.
I found with my cover that it was minutely wider than the rails in the upper, but this is solved by firmly squeezing inwards as you begin to insert the right hand rail, behind the ejection cut out. I now like it this way as it gives a real positive fitting. I also removed a minute amount from the rear flat face of the cover as it was causing the reciever halves to not close fully as supplied. Maybe you'll need to do this also, but if the halves close fully I'd leave well alone. A snug fit will help hold zero.
