I just got a crossbow and have been learning how to shoot. It's a gas! A very respectable first effort BTW, 40cal...

Nice big Deer. I shot a small one once due to perspective, felt bad about it.

I would be interested to know that myself...and if I'm not being TOO nosy, the distance of the shot... :?

It was a 30 yard shot and I used an older Barnette. It was borrowed from a friend of mine to see if I even wanted to get one. 150 lb this one was and had an autococker. I want one now but not sure which one or what kind.

I bought a Barnett CR 150 from a feller on the Files. The only thing I don't like about it is the stock is too short. I have it adjusted all the way out so I'll have to adapt something. I've been practicing at 25 yards with a red dot scope and am able to get consistent hits in a punkin (we can't use crossbows to hunt in NC:cry: ) The biggest complaint I have about the crossbows is that if you don;t hit the target count that bolt as GONE! It only took me losing three before I had sharpened my skills out of monetary desperation! The Horton's at our local sporting goods look awful sweet but with a steep asking price (more than I'm willing to pay for a crossbow:eek: ) I'm happy for now with the lesser investment of the Barnett and as you already know for yourself, they sure get the job done...

4wheeler and hubby drug it out, yes there is no better way than to do your own processing, we make our own jerky too. Hubby cleaned it for me and quartered it. We bought a meat grinder from China Mart fore like $50 bucks, already had a jerky maker, bought some jerky seasoning from China Mart for like $6.00 and for roasts we marinade in Italian Seasoning and cook in beef broth. There are some really awesome wild game recipe books out there. Can't give ya anymore good tips b/c this is my first year deer hunting. (I refuse to hunt on public land)

Great shooting 40calgal! My wife really wants a good crossbow. Now I have an idea what to get her for Christmas. You look like you had fun!

Congrats......nice doe (doe's) (Splat beat me to it) looks like a good shot behind the shoulder......kinda hard to tell for sure but I see the hair ruffled there.

I have not shot a crossbow but once or twice.....they seem very accurate or the one I shot was. Barrett but I don't know the Model number and it had crosshair
scope on it.

What is the limit ( range wise) for a crossbow? Is 30yds - 40 yards about the
limit for a humane kill?

Where's the crossbow?

The crossbow does not fit into the category of archery equipment. It has a stock, cheek plate, trigger, and rifle style sights. The crossbow can be fitted with a telescopic sight, carried cocked, shot out of a vehicle window, and has an average effective range of 69 yards (Marlow Report).

This is what reports say BUT I personally would not shoot more than 30-50 yards to ensure quick, clean kill.

Hope your wife enjoys it as much as I do.

Any game harvested with archery equipment is earned,Congrats on your 1st doe!!!
In my home state(AR.),we are allowed to use the crossbow.
There are a few things I have learned,The crossbow is much heavier to carry to the stand, hangs up on brush, low limbs more than my bow,I do gain a slight advantage in shooting - only because I do not have "draw",only aim and fire.It shoots much faster, but the distance for humane shots is like .40 stated - prob. 35 -40 yds. The ONE thing I hate,is when I'm through,I have to decock the limbs,& I do this by holding on to the string with a double gloved hand, with my foot in the stirup,I then pull the trigger...Ouch. LOL.this is done more often than not.Hunting is Fun.One question,Do you arm & dearm the limbs ?

Ya made meat right fine there Ma'am. Been a long time since I took a deer. I used to go every other year when I lived in N.C. . We had a 900 acre tract that a max of 8 people hunted. Only way I got an invite was that I kept the maintenance up on the walk in reefer on site. We used to bait the permanent stands for three months prior to opening day with shelled corn. MASSIVE amounts of corn. We would stop baiting about two weeks before season. (Law took a dim view of shooting deer over bait) We took some mighty seal fat and sleek does back then. Your deer looks to be prime table fare.
