View Full Version : Strange sounds in my woods tonight.

Got home as the sun was setting and attempted to settle in, warming up from the cold with a cup of dark african joe.

Oldest daughter runs out of her bedroom saying "Did you hear that"? Upon listening, I hear my dogs raising heck and then a long, low, and very loud "aaaawooooooooo" in the creek behind my house. Both dogs stopped, looked at each other, looked at me, and we all shrugged our shoulders in disbelief. Again, "aaaawooooooooo" not more than 100 feet from me but being dark now and with the sound coming from very thick woods, it was impossible to see even with my spotlight.
Whatever it is, it is not running off, spooked like a coyote. Coyotes are an every night thing around here and I know what they sound like. This howl was not a coyote, coydog, or any other critter I have ever heard around here, ever.

I'll refrain from what I think it is, but the sound is unmistakable and made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up. Whatever it is, is still around too. I've been out there three times now with a scattergun and q-beam but it moves only far enough away to avoid a sighting. Dogs are going nuts.

That was my first thought but then I remembered that I have silver-tipped barbed wire, wild garlic growing along the creek banks, a cross on my chimney, a barrier of sea-salt sprinkled around my house, and a three legged cat roaming the perimeter.
So, I feel that I have all bases covered as far as werewolves. My thoughts lean towards a possible rabid jackalope.

I remember the first time that I ever heard a wolf howl...

All the hairs on the back of my neck stood at attention, too...

It's almost like there's some sort of "racial" memory that tries to remind you of the time when Uncle Og was eaten by one...

The first thing that entered my mind when I heard it was "DAMN!!, that thing is huge!". I mean, it sounds like one big, bad critter. The echo of the creek bottom and woods made it that much worse. I really got a feeling that it didn't mind one bit that I knew it was there.

This kind of event always reminds me of that old Gary Larsen cartoon, where the guy in the overcoat is cornered in the alley by the gang of "street ducks."

The caption reads something like, "Cornered in the alley by the street ducks, Freddy (or fill in any appropriate name) didn't know what to do. And then he remembered his 12 gauge..." Of course, the caption is accompanied by an image of "Freddy" pulling his double barreled shotgun out of his overcoat.

The point is that there aren't very many problems that a good 12 gauge can't fix... Including howling ones...

Have never heard a sound like that before. Sounds almost like a fox but like a bird too. Kinda freaky sounding nonetheless.

The other night we had our alarms go off out at the edge of the yard and looked out b/c both our rotties were all hackled up sniffing towards the door. Well, when we looked out we saw one monster of a dog (wolf). Was bigger than my 160# rottie and it carried not drug but carried off the button buck carcass we had outside from cleaning deer. I have a whole new appreciation for the woods.

Owl we have those all over here, b/c we free range our chickens and have lost alot of them to Owls and hawks.

I have heard some really weird howls from my own dogs ... the pup makes a sound like a Harley-Davidson chainsaw or a bear howling. And that was directed at a BUG! Ain't nobody, nuthin' coming over the fence after hearing THAT ... don't underestimate the sounds a dog can make.

One never knows whats out in the woods. Strangest thing I ever saw was a hyena in northern canada in the headlites about 3am somewhere north of Ft St John. At least thats what it looked like and I got a good look.It was quarting away with that weird hyena lope and stopped on the center line and looked right at me for just a second. That was really creapy. Guess I'll never know what that was. If I'd been a couple seconds sonner I could of seen the big foot it was running with.

faltitude- buy a nightvision scope, put it on a FAL, climb up on the roof so you have a good field of view, then wait till "it" starts in again, i bet ya could find SOMETHING to shoot at... make sure ya take a pillow and a pot 'o coffee, as the wait might be awhile. my cousin and i had a brown bear taking out our grabage can every night several years ago, so one night i went out with the 12 gauge, seal bombs and a maglight and waited, and waited, till i finally woke up at 6 AM to see the garbage spead all over the road, oh was i pissed.

Fal,

There are still timber wolves in a lot of parts of the country. They're not seen much, because they don't want to be.

My Grandad used to hunt them with hounds when I was a kid and I went with him more than once. We also had them kill every chicken in the hen house more than once. If you've ever heard a true wolf howl, you'll never forget it.

Wolves aren't like most predators, they will kill just for the rush of the hunt, no matter what the tree huggers say. Too many documented cases of wittnessed kills where they just left the 'victim'.

Most smart dogs will stay on the porch. If they don't, it's a mistake they'll usually only get to make once. I lost a couple of pretty good dogs as a kid that weren't as smart as they should have been. Don't know how big your dogs are, but wolves have been known to lure them away from man for the kill.

Contrary to popular belief, wolves aren't afraid of man. They're just smart enough to recognize a insurmountable theat, man and gun.

It was DABTL having one of his running fits because we are still playing in the sandbox.

Seriously though....an owl would be a good guess. They do make some strange noises.

Anybody hear from Faltitude since yesterday, or did the strange soundmaker do him in...?

"And then he remembered his 12 gauge..."

That's a quote to keep in mind under these circumstances...

Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook's
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein...

...I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic's
His hair was perfect....

Gary, Ms. Owl had never heard "Werewolves of London" till after we met. She LOVED it, until she picked up on the lyric, "a little old lady got mutilated late last night". :uhoh:
