I have been hunting a bunch with my .45-70 Marlin guide gun. I have hunted thick cutovers and in a huge White Oak grove. Boy these deer sure do love those white oak acorns.

Anyway, He came in after 3 does. I was sitting on the ground in a blind. The does walked within 20 yards of me and fed on through. When they got 60 yards away from me, I heard him coming. He was breaking limbs and making alot of noise. He was about 50 yrds away when I got a good shot at him and when I saw his rack, I did not hesitate on the shot. I put that 350 gr .45-70 right into his neck and it hit the neckbone and he dropped instantly.

I really do love my guide gun now. I really trust it in the underbrush.

As for the mount......He is mounted in my memory. I keep the horns , but I have not shot a mountable deer yet and I have killed a lot of deer. I want atleast a perfect 12 point or larger, but my deer are always <12 or atypical. I shot a ugly 13 point a couple years ago. Everybody has 8 and 10 point bucks mounted. I just do not want to be like everybody else. Trophy Bucks are hard to find around here. We have a BUNCH of small deer.

Very well done Doug. Congratulations. 213 lb would be a monster in south Arkansas. We just can't let them get that big here.

A typical mature buck here will be 160 to 180 lbs.

I'd mount that one over a nice typical 10 or whatever. Oddball racks like that grab attention better than the perfect symmetrical racks any day around here in MI. My FiL shot a 13 couple years back, one side had double row of tines, with them splayed out like a shark's jaw. 8 or 9 on the left beam alone. Much more interesting rack than the 12 he shot close to 30 years ago now, and it's not a little 12 either. The 12 dressed out at about 230lbs.

Nice one Doug!

Been making friendly with the does?

I have let does go by and I know that they saw me, smelled me but they didn't spook or stomp or blow. I remained motionless. They came by again, a couple of days later and again I sat and let them go by. Then...the rut started and
here this babe comes....yup...buck in hot pursuit.....he didn't make it either:D

Yeah!....Don't shoot the bait until after the Rut. Then you can kill a few does for that tender sweet meat!

Dressed out at 230? Are you talking about a whitetail or a mule deer? That would be 350+ lbs undressed!
