I have some good relatives who live in rural areas of SW Missouri. They would be glad to see us relocate there from Colorado, and we have considered it for various reasons. What do ya'll think about this area as a TEOTWAWKI survival area?
Some parts of southern Missouri are SERIOUSLY rural, even along the main highways. There is plenty of moisture and home gardens do well- and I have seen more deer than you can shake a stick at. At first look the area seems better suited for long term survival than southern Colorado. Im thinking mostly about my family, as in the "long term" Im dead without my medication, which would likely become unavailable.

That area would be a good choice, since it would also add family members to your plan. You have to consider JOBS, MEDICATION, and how real do you believe TEOTWAWKI will really be.????

I bailed out of the SW Missouri area, Springfield/Branson, back in 1998. While its a very rural area with some very down home folks, at least for a nurse, it was a horrible place to try and earn a living.

Housing costs/land prices are very reasonable, at least in relationship to some other places in the U.S. Ft Wood is in SW MO and is huge, used as a training facility in the past, not sure about now...i am out of the loop...

I don't anticipate moving back for some time, maybe when i retire..if that ever occurs....The stereotype ozark hillbilly, drunk, in-breeding, prejudice, and just dumb, is just that, a stereotype....but, like most stereotypes, there is a small bit of truth to it...

just imho, ymmv

Southern MO would be a terrible place to hold up for TSHTF situations. Everytime I go fishing, I never enjoy myself because I am constantly removing smallmouth bass from my hook. Deer hunting is too stressful. It never fails, every year I have to make split second decision on which whitetail to take. That is alot of pressure when there are soo many choices. Turkey hunting is just as bad if not worse. All of the freshwater springs are too cold for swimming and are choked up with useless rainbow trout that escape from local hatcheries. The list goes on ad naseum...

Well I'm certainly going to stay here.

One think to consider is that if TEOTWAWKI includes a nuclear exchange, Kansas City, Whiteman AFB, Ft Leonard Wood and various areas where missile silos are located are prime targets.

Other side of state; New Madrid is in the SE corner of the state, and Branson/Springfield area is in the SW corner.

On other notes: IF you are woried about a Nuclear situation; then being in the SW corner (west of Branson area), your primary targets you need to worry about are going to be in Oklahoma (Ft Lawson, Ft Sill, Tulsa, OKC......). Ft Lenard Wood is located in South Central part of the state, and is currently one of the largest USArmy bases in the US. Whiteman AFB is located 25 miles west of Sedalia (roughly 50 miles EES of KC; West Central MO) and is home of the B-2 Bomber Fleet. From the Branson area KC is approx. 200 miles North. There are (as far as I am aware) no active missile silos left in the state, all have been decommisoned over the last several years. Other possible targets of intrest are St. Louis, Jefferson City (state capital), Columbia, and Springfield (these last two are both high population 100k+ and home to 1 or more universities).

"Misery" is no place to be,... regardless of how it's spelled.
