These things seem to be a 'reasonable' substitute for MREs. I know you need to be able to heat water for the things, but they're not as tempature sensative as MREs. I have several for a camping trip next week that looks like it's going to fall through, so I haven't been able to try one yet. Although, my friends said they are better tasting than MREs. The only problem I have with them is that they are loaded with sodium! I'm not worried about hypertension yet, but damn! 52% of your daily allowance of sodium in one meal is a bit much.

well i can't speak about the sodium as i don't care and when out hiking in to the hunting spot and sweating alot.. it may help..

You can also buy them in the #10 cans-shelf life at least 30 yrs. (once opened, use like anything else).
I bought pouches to see what I liked, and then stocked up (who am I kidding-it never ends) on cans of what I like.
The Granola w/Blueberries are very good-don't need hot water and not as much sodium.
I have a crapload stashed-MRE's are O.K.,but you will tire of them somewhat quickly.

Freeze dried food is great. Having said that... If you eat freeze dried food exclusivley, you are going to be in trouble. Drink lots of water and eat 3 or 4 prunes with every meal. You will thank me, wait for it, in the end.

MRE's vs Freeze dried...
MRE's of course are ready to eat.
Freeze dried you need water and you need it Hot.
(Two things you may or may not have available.)
I look for MRE's for the first 72 hours when things should be the toughest, and then switch to FD food after that.

There is a group buy on AR15.com in the surival equipment exchange. The prices cannot be beat.
I buy most of mine from www.beprepared.com.Just got a shipment yesterday.
Provident Pantry is also good stuff-I bought a couple cases of the fat free milk-can't tell the difference from store bought.Get on the mailing list-they send out a specials catalog every month.
I also buy MRE entrees and other stuff from them.I bought a crap load of a powdered "gatorade" mix-.40 a pkg.Tastes good and cheap too!
ETA-here's the link for the group buy:

He's done a few ( I've bought once-soon to be twice) with no problems. He's a stand up guy-buy with confidence.

I have to respectfully disagree with you.As long as you mix it with water, you should have no problems whatsoever.I have eaten quite a bit and have never had any, wait for it,"regular" problems:shades: .
A lot of the stuff we buy at the store is basically freeze dried-Ramen,Mac. and Cheese, pancake mixes,etc.,etc...

:| Maybe it is just me. The only time I have this prob. is with freeze dried food. To my credit I know of otheres that have the same issue. Perhaps you have cast iron bowels.

Cast iron bowels would fit in with my heart of ice and lack of a soul (so I've been told).

I looked thru my stuff to see what the lowest sodium content was.Everything lists sodium content by serving.
Vegetable Stew (Provident Pantry) has the least-1% DV per serving
Granola with Blueberries is next-2%
Potatos and Cheese with Broccoli-33%
Everything else I have is higher than that-mostly in the 40% range.
I'm not too worried about it myself-I worry more about Cholesterol (scrambled eggs-190%!!!!) than sodium. We all have to die sometime though.
MR 308 (762)-I used to be a republican-now I'm just a disenfranchised voter.Constitutionalist or Libertarian maybe.
