One man's militia is Reuter's vigilante :

Residents recall vigilante justice after Katrina
After the storm, the neighborhood association had to act as law enforcement and emergency response unit as city services collapsed and the police force was unable to protect them.

Looking out for one another
Citizens organized armed patrols and checked on the elderly. They slept on their porches with loaded shotguns and bolted awake when intruders stumbled on the aluminum cans they had scattered on the sidewalk.

Gunshots rang out for days, sometimes terrifyingly close.

For Harris, the first warning sign came on Tuesday, the day after the storm, when two young men hit his partner, Vinnie Pervel, over the head and drove off with his Ford van.

“A police car drove up behind me and saw it happening but he didn’t do anything,” said Pervel, who heads the 1,500-household neighborhood association.

Then residents heard that police vehicles were being carjacked and looters were taking guns and ammunition from nearby stores.

“We thought, ‘Perhaps this is going to get really ugly,”’ said Gareth Stubbs, a marine surveyor who lives across Pelican Street from Harris and Pervel.

A Texas woman who runs a Web site called Polimom.com served as a link between those who stayed and those who had left. With her help, they stockpiled an arsenal of shotguns, derringer pistols and an old AK-47.

They were put to use the next day.

Fatal shootings
“Some looters came up and pulled a gun on the wrong group of men,” said Harris, who said he did not fire a gun himself and declined to say who else was involved in the battle.

“Two men were shot right there,” Harris said, pointing down the street as he watered his rose bushes. “One was shot in the back, the other in the leg, and the third I was told made it a block and a half before he died in the street. I did not go down to see the body.”

“For five days we didn’t need FEMA, the Red Cross or the National Guard,” Harris said. “The neighborhood took care of itself.”

The gov't had better put the kibosh on this article or the sheeple might start to get ideas. Not needing anyone to take care of them? The mind boggles.
Oh, and good for them.

They just didn't understand....

If at first you don't need the gov't, They'll take your guns, and then you will need the gov't.

This should be widely distributed and reported.

Smart folks! During our patrols in south central LA during the last riots we saw several neighborhoods with hasty roadblocks set up (using cars/trucks), at each end of the street with armed civilians guarding their hood. System seemed to work. A lot of marauding elements, a.k.a. bangers, were turned away.

Maybe we should test our home owners association on their Second Amendment interpretation?

In the 1st riots same setup held the line, the cops were overwelmed in the first hour or so, the guard came a day or so later , but it was armed citisens of many races that held the line, for several days.

In those days one could sympathize with the outrage somewhat, not the action but the emotion behind it.

Lesson that I kept was the SHTF real quick and may end your life at the hands of goblins.

Now that my kids are raised and all not as big a deal as when I was fourteen and holding back 6 adults with a P.O.S. Italian .25 ACP.

Bow and Arrow can come in handy too. SShhh.

I took this picture in Algiers.

I zoomed in on that photo. In small print, at the bottom I found this:

'Attention fed.gov, FEMA, state and local authorities: Thank you, but we do not need any help at this time. PLEASE do not take our guns!'

NRA has sent out an email that they have gotten a federal court restraining order to stop the confiscation and force return of the legally owned weapons.

When I was down there, I did hear a rumor(one of thousands, usually bullshit) of a group of neighbors in Algiers (sp?) that killed three looters-presumably. Sounds similiar to the one posted. As told to me, they split up all weapons and ammunition and rotated watch over the area. As told to me, they covered the roadway with bottles, and blindly fired down the street when they heard noise.
I was told of two killed on scene with one heavy blood trail leading down/up the street. Could be bullshit...could be murder...could be self-defense.

"One man's militia is Reuter's vigilante :"

Not surprising from a news service.

I heard the same story but probably from a different source. What they failed to mention was they took the car batteries and headlights out of their car and rigged spotslights that could light up the street at the flip of a switch. And the guy that left the blood trail had fired at them until he realized he was outgunned. They wern't blindly shooting down the street.

"Gunfight? What gunfight? I heard rumblings about some good ole' boys taking matter into their own hands, but not me. No sir. I'm a peaceable, law abiding man. I would never do anything like that.";)

I dunno 'bout the rest of y'all, but that sounds more like a nightmare to me. In a SHTF scenario the last thing I would dream about is the chance to use my weapons. Not that I would have problem doing so mind you.
