I've said before I'm more of a straight blade knife gal as opposed to folding knives.
I got involved in a raffle of sorts on another board the other day and ended up winning a cable damascas knife. The gentleman who makes these is out of Brazil and is a craftsman. Good hefty blade and excellent workmanship (holds a real nice edge to it).
I'm glad I got it this way because there's no way I could afford his work otherwise.

Did I mention I thought it was pretty too (yes I like pretty things being a girl).

So would I owl, so would I.
I watched one of his knives go for almost $500...I just didn't have the money for it. He'd made a presentation case and everything for it.
The guy does some beautiful work. I continually go to the web site and drool. Fact is I think I'll try and find it again (I keep losing things - like my Camillas K-Bar - sigh)...I know it's in my bedroom somewhere (probably under the bed knowing me).

Finding blades in the midst of room clutter can be hazardous. My 13 yr old daughter found her scissors under her bed, in an undesireable way.
I'll have to Google the maker and look for myself.

See this thread for a couple of pics showing the start of making a blade from wire rope.

Its not as difficult as some would think. You weld one end of the rope to a piece of steel, then heat in the forge. When hot enough, twist the rope tight with a wrench, add liberal amounts of Borax and start hammering into a knife blank. The trick is keeping the rope tight while you hammer. The short step at the front of the anvil, just behind the horn is where you put the rope while forging it. It will take a few heats, and more Borax and hammering to get your rectangular blank. Most don't hammer the knife taper into the blade when doing damascus as you lose definition of the pattern. They just hammer into a rectangular bar, then grind to shape and etch with acid to bring out the pattern.
I may have a few more pics of the process, if anyone's interested email me, or just go to the Bowie hammerin!
