this is one of the places i got permission to hunt on, now if i could just draw a tag..
the rubs are at the bottom of the hill right under the saddle, on top is a well i check, there is a trail going across the road and down to the fields that looks like a cow trail..(no cattle in this area)...
these elk should be great eating, feeding on alfalfa...the landowner hates em..

and did some load testing today :shades:
took the winchester classic laminated to work today to try some reloads..
66.0 grains of imr 4350 under a 168 grain barnes triple shok..
3 shots under an inch but primers weren't flat yet, so i just got done loading 3 more with 67.0 grains..
oh, and it seems that barnes's shoot real good at 20 thou's off the rifling....
it's a 300 wsm..
3.5 - 10 luppy..
i think this is going to be a great elk thumper...getting ready,, got the fever,, bout 6 more weeks.

Looks like a good spot and like that bull is starting to get itchy. Only been Elk hunting once in my life, many years ago. I'll remember it till the day I die (or get Alzheimers). A friend of mine was goin' to show me the ropes. He picked me up at O-dark-thirty and we headed up into the hills. All the way up (about an hour) he was puffing on big fat cigars. The smoke was so thick in the truck that my eyes were watering. I was a little concerned about us smellin a bit but thought "Oh well, I'll just have to pay close attention to the wind direction". We finally arrived, got geared up, ready to head out and he fires up another cigar. I asked him "whats up, I thought we were going to hunt?" His reply "I always smoke cigars when I hunt, covers up the human scent" Needles to say we were not sucessful. I split off & went opposit direction but only saw cows & calves. Since then been going to Nebraska for Pheasant, Bobwhite, and Whitetail during Washington elk season. Let us know how the .300 WSM works out. I've been trying to decide between that and a smaller cal. short mag.
