....so I see that they make an "automatic" version. Is this legal for Joe Citizen to own? I see that a couple of online stores will only sell it LE or military.

Assuming I can't have that legally, what would be the next best thing as far as an easy opening Benchmade knife?

The

520 Presidio

943 Osborne

and the 710 McHenry and Williams

are a few I'm liking.

Thanks

If I get an automatic, this is the one I like: (Benchmade Pardue 5000SBT)

It depends on the state you live in whether or not you may legally own an automatic knife. I'm not up on all the state laws for knives.

Personally, I hope your state lets you have the automatic, 'cause that looks like one nice knife.

They're not cheap. Check you're local laws, most states are legal to own, just ont carry. Check it out and PM me.

Many states such as mine allow sales of auto knives to civillians.

Feds do have regulations on the sale of auto knives......technically there are no interstate sales of auto knives to individuals....even if they are legal in your state. This part of the law is as grey as they come.

Whoever knowingly introduces, or manufactures for introduction,
into interstate commerce, or transports or distributes in
interstate commerce, any switchblade knife, shall be fined not more
than $2,000 or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

I decided against an automatic. Just don't want to get caught with it. It appears to be illegal to carry in Texas unless it is a curio & relic.

A member here PM'd me about an Emerson SOCFK.

It's not an auto, but I saw a vid of a guy pulling it out and it is FAST.

Here is the vid of it: (right click, save target as)

that is a great knife. A buddy of mine has the exact same knife. There have been more than a few contests on which is faster. Bad news is that the knife you are looking at it FASTER out of the pocket than an auto.

Expect nice wear spots on your slacks and pocket edges.

Looks like a modified CQC7, the little guard above the thumb piece is different. Had one of the other for years 'til oldest son lost it. Favorite knife ever.

RSU;

That one's blade is virtually identical to my CQC7. My handles are not as curvy, but same material, or so it appears. Mine's kinda bulky to carry, so I only clip it on when I "feel the need". Not much good for "doing your nails", but hey, it's a social blade,,,right !?!?!? I picked mine up from a board member just before last Christmas.

There's a fella that has a booth at all the Pasadena gunshows. He demo'ed the fast draw of some of his stock for #1 Son and I. Unbelievable. Hell on the jeans pockets tho'.

RSU@1kmph,

I think you've misinterpreted the wording of the Texas law.

- 46.05. Prohibited Weapons. (a) A person commits and offense
if he intentionally or knowingly possesses, manufactures,
transports, repairs, or sells... (5) a switchblade
knife... (d) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution
under this section that the actor's conduct: (1) was
incidental to dealing with a switchblade knife,
springblade knife, or short-barrel firearm solely as an
antique or curio...

The antique/curio exceptions are not applied to carry. They are generally applied to having the item in a collection and going to or from an event or gathering to display such a collectable. The exception also would apply to repairing such a antique/curio.

So if you were caught carrying an auto in Texas you'd be arrested and charged with carrying a prohibited weapon. You would then hope to have your lawyer convence the DA to turn you loose based on 46.05(d), but most anything but a pre-1957 switchblade would get rejected as a curio or antique.

I've decided to stay out of any gray areas. No automatic knives for me, no matter the date made. I think I'll be happy with the Emerson I ordered.

I have a BM Elishawitz Stryker auto that is nothing more than a toy, IMO. I prefer my Griptilian for ease of use and speed. I have it, I guess, just because the powers that be don't want me to have it.
