There is another "Bowie hammer-in" coming up Oct. 14-16 in Knoxville, TN. I attended the first one he had a couple years back and it lasted three days. Lots of experienced bladesmiths attended providing various demonstrations and there was time for hands on experience. It wasn't all forging, but flint napping, sheath making, damascus, etc. There were some contests like hemp cutting and wood chopping, and also a raffle and some vendors.

If anyone is interested, see this link below to info on last years event which includes the address and contact phone numbers. I believe he allows some camping, but call him to make sure if you plan to camp.

Here are some photos of the 2003 hammer-in.

The guy to the far left in the brown shirt in the first two pics is the host. My apologies to those who's names I can't remember. Center top is Len Landrum who specializes in 52100 and left of him is Larry Harley. Middle guy at bottom is a traditional forger who taught at Dollywood for years. Second picture, guy at left is Mike Fitzgerald.

Nice pictures of the event! You should come to Larry's HammerIn as well.

Bowie does allow some camping. If anyone wants to camp at my place for Bowie's HammerIn they're more than welcome.

I got to admire and respect men that can make such art out of steel. Those are the kind that conquered this continent.

I agree. What is amazing about these men is their desire to teach others and pass on the knowledge some have spent a lifetime learning rather than trying to keep secret the "tricks" of the trade.

Everyone is welcome whether a knifemaker, a collector, or someone just curious about how knives are made. Sunday is when the smiths display some of their wares for sale. So if you are just looking to buy some great knives from some of the best smiths in the country, Sunday is the day to come.

For those who couldn't make the event, they missed out on a lecture by the legendary Jim Batson. Jim gave a lecture on the heat treatment of various steels, what a treat.

Thanks for coming to Knoxville Mr. Batson.

I'll try to follow-up with some pictures of the cutting competion. Burt Foster won first place (he just won first place at the Moran hammer-in also), followed by Len Landrum with second and Jim Batson got third.
