I have a very nice piece of hand forged(layered) Damascus steel from a blacksmith.
It's been roughly shaped into a tanto point by me , but I would like to see it shaped into more of a hunter/skinner shape. I need someone that can take it from there to the nice finished, oiled blade ready for me to do my majic with some nice rosewood handle slabs.
I'll pay whatever fair market price is for blade shaping finishing work....Anyone need some work or want a piece of damascus to practice on?

Hmmm...I might be able to do that for you.
You just want it ground to a particular shape?
You going to do the etch yourself?
Heat treat?
You can check my homepage for some of my work.

Dude...they're just knives.
I don't even feel like I'm very good at this yet.

I have enough metalsmithing knowledge to perceive what it took to make those. So, let this be the first FLAME on the Sharper Side.
STFU with the overly modest, Stimp'

I don't have the metalsmithing knowledge (I do have the background in it) but I would like to say I'm with owlcreekok on this - you are being way too modest.
I collect knives, mostly custom knives made by craftsman/individuals. Your knives definitely qualify. Don't sell yourself short as you have a talent.

I have a knife design in mind. It's a skinner design by Chris Nilluka, called "Corrugata". My piece of steel is not quite as big as the blade he made, but it could easily be scaled to fit my blank...I have a nice picture of this, but need to email it to you....or you can look on this site
www.chrisndesigns.com look for "available" and "corrugata"
Thanks for the help
:fal: P.S. I remember you from the RBGC Fal only shoot in 2003. I shot in that match.

Cessna...nice choice on the skinner. Practical blades are always more attractive to me.
I'd have to see the current status of your piece, but that blade looks like a simple enough form to grind.
You want the file work on the back like that? I think I could duplicate that work.

Yea, I never got into knives I could'nt use, I consider it a tool, so it's got to be functional as well. If you feel up to it, I would like the file work, but only from the blade tip to the beginning of the handle, no sense in having to fill in the handle gaps with something. I can send you a picture of the blank if you want to check it out before commiting to the work....
I got it from a guy second hand and he tried to put a shape to it, but he did'nt do much so it still has plenty of material to be removed to get the skinner shape...;)
Not sure as to what style Damascus it is, I do know it was hand layered/forged with traditional Blacksmithing tools. Some guy out of Alabama, he was at the Gwinett Co gun show a couple times.
Thanks

Interesting. The Damascus blade on my page is made by the same guy then, I bought the piece from him at the Gwinnett show. It's pretty stuff alright, though a corner of my billet had a cold shut.
I am guessing it has not been hardened?
Do you want it hardened and etched before it comes back?
And a big question, are you in a hurry?
Send me a pic...we'll talk.

Your most recent knife is very nice.
Are you using gas to normalize and heat treat or are you using your coke forge?

Thanks!
Up til now I have been using the coal forge for all heat treat. I recently acquired a Oxy-Acetylene rig and finished the propane forge, so I am looking forward to having more options this fall.
As you can imagine, getting even soaks in the coal forge is...problematic.
