Baboons are usually $50-100 and used for leopard baits..

I shot a baboon in Zimbabwe in '95. I'm pretty sure Chimps are not hunted anywhere. If there is a country that allows it, you probably wouldn't want to go there anyway.

I heard a story back a few years ago about a guy squirrel hunting in Arkansas and ended up shooting a spider monkey. Threw in the back of his truck and went through town showing it off so as nobody thought he was crazy!
It apparantly was a pet at one time before getting loose.
Around the Austin, TX area, there is an old National Guard range on the East side of town, the woods aaround it are full of some type of monkeys that escaped. I actually heard them, so I know they are out there. Dunno if anyone would have access to hunt them or not.....if someone did have access would they really want to hunt........monkeys??

Are you sure they're monkeys and not primates?

I shot a monkey in South Africa with a shotgun when I was a kid. It fell out of the tree, and started bawling it's head off, cried just like a baby with real tears. That was the end of my monkey hunting.

MANY Africans eat monkeys, chimps and apes.

Many Africans eat bugs and garbage. In fact, on any given day, many Africans eat nothing. I don't think that is a recommendation for a chimp-roast. However, if you really have a hankerin for some barbequed ape, go get ya one.

There have been instances of missionary-roasts in the past.

And there is some valid speculation that eating chimps introduced the AIDS virus to Africa (and the world).

I saw this show on PBS that Alan Alda hosted about deforrestation in africa and how its creating access so poachers can kill chimps. They showed a bunch of black as night africans eating chimps. What was realy gross was they said the hands are a favorite piece to eat for these "people", and when they chewed on a hand it looked human.
I support hunting, and hunting in Africa, however anyone who eats an animal that can smoke a cigar or ride a tricycle is below me.

I thought it was that homosexual flight attendant who had sex with a chimp. Then had sex with men all around the flight plan. The CDC had that pretty well worked out.

The current theory is that SIV was most likely transmitted to a hunter from chimpanzees to humans during butchering where it became HIV-1. HIV-2 is thought to have come from another simian. Gaetan Dugas, the flight attendant, though he did alot of men all over the world and boasted about it, wasn't the first person in North America to have AIDS. The honor of the first HIV case goes to some dude in the Belgian Congo in 1959.
Yet another good reason not to hunt chimps.

Sounds like you know a lot about it. I guess the CDC just made up all those charts and maps they showed back in the '80s when AIDS was officially known as GRID and they were still rooting out HIV as the cause. I can see that "scientists" wouldn't want to look stupid when they don't have a clue. Then again, maybe they changed the story for the same reason they changed the name: political correctness. 1959? I'd doubt that without seeing persuasive peer reviewed source material but would be interested in seeing it since I seem to be way behind on this.
AIDS, Syphillus..... sex with animals is bad, Mkaaay. [/MrMackey]

A link to the abstract on the 1959 case published in the journal Nature:

Unless you are a Nature subscriber you'll have to check out the full article from a library.

In the late fifties my Uncle was stationed in Kenya and Ethiopia. While there he and some buddies took leave and went hunting with some local natives as impromtu guides. They shot quite a few exotic critters and gave them to the guides. One in the group just had to shoot a baboon out of a group they come across, when he went to retrieve it the other baboons chased him dragging the carcass behind up a tree. His buddies layed down cover fire so he could retreat back to the main party without the baboon carcass. The baboons retrieved the carcass and disappeared into the rocks and brush.
The locals told them that the baboons eat their dead ,and evidently werent giving up supper:eek:

it is more likely that bovine tissue used in culturing smallpox vaccine for distribution to east african countries contained BIDS (bovine immunodeficiency syndrome), and that the BIDS mutated into AIDS, for widespread innoculation under a UN sponsored WHO program in the late 70's.
they reduced smallpox deaths, and unleashed a plague on the world.
monkey is available here in luoyang, but you have to order it a few days in advance. they strap the little buggers under the table with the top of the head sticking up through a hole. a mallet is used to crack the skull, and the brain is eaten live. they eat human babies as part of a soup in guandong, so i guess a monkey is no big deal. the soup thing is part of the reason why you can't get an ultrasound for determination of sex until the 6th month. too many little girls don't live to see the light of day.

I've never seen any peer reviewed research to support Dr. Douglas' BIV hypothesis. Seifkes published the BLV / Visna virus recombination hypothesis, but the SIV theory is more widely accepted and has been subject to much more scientific scrutiny as far as I know. The really interesting thing is it looks like chimps may have gotten it from hunting and killing other monkeys, yet another good lesson in not hunting things that resemble oneself.

easier to blame some monkeys than to blame the WHO.

I thought Aids was started by the U.N. , all the places they went to sticking needles in 1977-9 are where it propagated.

Chimps, Orangutans & Gorillas are rapidly heading the way of the Dodo.
Apparently the Ebola virus is the biggest threat to the Chimps' future - deforestation seems to have increased whatever is carrying the virus

I would think that, if a person wanted to hunt various kinds of apes, New Orleans currently has a great surplus of them, desparately in need of being shot.

If you want to read something that will scare the crap out of you, read "THE HOT ZONE." It's about the Ebola and all true. Goes into graphic description of how the virus kills, pretty nasty. One of the author's hypothesis is that Ebola is a predatory virus, that's why we can't find where it's coming from.

A Class 3 dealer here in Ohio goes on hunts down in Africa, and works as with the anti-poaching groups down there. He's always said that the most violent animals down there are the baboons. He said they will work in groups, will lure hunters into traps, etc. He said they are smart creatures, and they wouldn't hunt them except for the fact that they like to raid farms and destroy everything. He said they are like rioters, they don't just take what they need, they destroy everything in sight. He has a bunch of stuff ones in his shop, along with many other creatures he has taken in Africa. Great guy to talk to, and has some wonder equipment.
