You won't find prints or specifications for finishing a FAL receiver. You will have to reverse engineer it.

80% is stretching it, more like 10%. There is not one flat surface on one of the casting surfaces.

Been there done that. With lots of tooling and a Bridgeport, I still had over 80 hours in finishing one. What a pain in the butt.

When you get finished machining, then the real fun starts, the heat treatment. Mine moved all over the place and required going back on the mill for some final finish machining.

I think it's time to import from Imbel some Real 80% receivers and set up shop.

Thanks to members here ,I have enough castings to cover the kits I have. I will reverse engineer an Imbel reciever and make real L1A1 recievers. Anyone who has already made any recievers please let us in on any problems.

I have 25 yrs machining castings and now make and repair lost wax molds for a famous firearms Co. You need a starting point, then everything (dimensions)come from there.I am going to make a sq piece of material the size of the mag well and work off of this location.Maybe we can do a subject on a 80% casting machining?

They are 0% raw, unmachined castings. Not one surface has been touched with a cutting tool. Describing them as "80%" implies that only 20% of the manufacturing process is left to have a finished piece. Not so. One member describes having spent 80 hours as an experienced machinist finishing one. I don't think 80 hours=20% by any stretch of the imagination....

I have never seen any but 0%, raw castings. Not one hole is drilled, not one surface cut....nothing.

CAI investment castings are for all intents and purposes are 80%.. You still have to square them up.
Mill the top cover and bolt holder grooves and clearances. Mill the charging handle groove. Open the breechface, and square and thread the barrel opening. Provide all the right holes in all the right places.
This includes making all the tools and fixtures needed.
A lot easier said than done.
