I remember reading a story awhile back about a hunter with a bolt-action versus a bear. He came up upon the bear by accident, it was about 20 yards away and the bear stood up aggressively and looked at him. The hunter took one shot at the bear and the bear went full speed at him and gave him a good thrashing.
Thankfull he lived. But I personally think that if he had a semi-auto .308 FAL he could have put the Bear down. What are your opinions?

A lot of hunters aren't very good shots at the range, let alone when they have been humping all day over God's creation.
I'm sure 20 rounds in the boiler room would have greater effect than one.
But, one round in the boiler room from a rifle suited for bear ought to do it too.
I've hunted little bitty deer with my FAL. I launched a torrent of lead at one.
Missed like a sumbitch.
And the cold-blued barrel rusted like a sumbitch in that rain. Maybe shouldn't have got it that hot in the rain.

Hunted lots of hogs and such back in the day with a SLR. Worked just fine on them....I think 7.62 is all wrong for bear though...

I've hunted black bear with 7.62. I consider is a bit light for grizz.

I have taken my STG-58 but it is heavy to lug around. I prefer to use my Browning A-bolt in .270.

I was hunting black bear in Alaska years ago with a guy who used a Ruger SA Super Blackhawk .44 Mag. He took a shot at a bear which promptly disappeared into fairly deep cover. We entered and he seen the bear.....
Only time in my life i heard a single action revolver GO FULL AUTO...or at least that is what it sounded like!!
Bear disappears back into brush....we found him, dead, maybe half hour later....if he would have truly attacked the hunter...well, you get the picture...

My neighbor took a deer 2 years ago with a FAL I built. (Not in OH, we aren't to be trusted hunting deer with a rifle.)

Made a 5 rd. mag. with a couple of dowels cut to length. Used 150 Nosler green tips, hand load (42.5 IMR 4895, IIRC). Iron sights (Frankenfal Stg.58 type)....paced 170, over flat terrain...approx. 9:00 am....one shot....broken spine, my favorite shot to place, but pure luck at that distance standing/offhand. A young buck...(the quarry, not me)..
Nice shot

Its the shooter, not the gun that is most important.

I've written about it before. Made several 5 rd mags, Mexican match ammo with Radway and 150 gr Spire points. One shot frontal on cow elk(I hate that shot selection). Good bullet performance. STG got heavy and aluminum guards make a bunch of noise in the brush.
Other than putting a wounded Hyena out of it's misery, only on two legged game. Worked well enough on both.

I took three does last year with one of my FrankenF A Ls. I took another doe with another F A L. I took a doe the year before with an F A L and a 6 point buck with my Garand.
If I go this year, I will take an F A L, my Garand, an M1a and an M48 Mauser.
I always get funny looks from the other folks in camp when I load up a 20 rd mag and then cram another loaded 20 rd mag in my back pocket.
I never go with less than 24 rds when I carry my Garand. So far it hasn't been necessary to carry that much ammo, but there is no reason not to have it.
Oh yeah, I always have a 1911 in my IWB holster. Just in case ya know.

How could you ever consider such an un-sporting act as hunting game with a FAL? Now an L1A1, that's a whole different story!

have harvested several deer w/ 7.62 x 51 here in mich.
the guys I like to watch are the ones who carry sks rifles, guys around here call them semiauto 30-30s:D .
now as far as bear well shot placement is everything .......or maybe not?
a buddy and I were hunting Black Bear in michigans upper peninsula, he got a 30 yard broad side animal standing still shot with his 7mag. that bear took off like a rocket/bulldozer down threw the ceadar swamp. followed quite easily for about 200 yards, good blood trail, lots of broken brush,tracks...in our minds we already had him butchered and in the freezer and a roast in the oven. After that initial 200 yds the trail dwindled and disapeared.! we were wishing we new some of the locals who had hounds, 2 days of searching and never found that bear. depressing!!!
hebrew dude ; i get that same look , Im not sure why? I only carry 3 guns at once. my rifle is slinged , my 870 12ga. is slinged , I like to do some walking so as the terrain changes from higrond to thick swampor vice vera i switch firearms , also carry a 44 mag on my hip just in case i get a chance to take a close range shot. :?

Have shot several deer with my favorite Imbel with an FN 18" barrel bought from sledgehammer a long time ago. The only thing added is the springfield 6x40 on a dsa mount. I don't always use it but it has never let me down with winchester 150gr power points. It groups 1" with the scope and about the same without. Perfect for hunting deer, hogs, black bear, coyote etc. I like using it and it doesn't make me cringe when I beat on it a little bit.

I popped a cottontail rabbit with my Imbel once, can you say entrails hanging from the bushes?

I use my L1A1 for whitetail. Iron sights last year, scope next year (old guy eyes). Popped a grey squirrel with an 03A3 with 130gr hollow points. Not much left but a little red goo with grey fuzz mixed in. That's one darwinian lesson for the chatterboxes.

Yeah, I really hate that about Ohio.... Anyways the only thing I've ever hunted with my L1A1 was groundhogs. My best friend's grandpa has a huge farm that is covered with the things. They live off soybean and corn all year, and ever spring we come back and whack as many as we can over a weekend. Every year there are more... Mostly use ball ammo, which is quite sufficient I assure you, never taken a second shot before. Nosler tipped stuff is fun. Closest shot was standing over one hole when he decided to come back out....not a good idea.....

as much as i love my fals i'll never hunt with them again. while fine for deer, you never know what you are going to stumble on in the bush. last year i crested a ridge on the border with british columbia and there was a small herd of the fattest slickest elk i've ever seen 35yds from me. i had my fal loaded with premium facory ammo and topped with an eotech. i'm pretty quick and accurate with this combo out to 200yds or so. a 7x7 bull looked up at me and i let loose with 2 quick shots to the neck and 2 to the shoulder before he cleared the border. 4 rounds from 40yds and i know i hit him as there was blood everywhere. my hunting partner wanted nothing to do with invading a sovereign nation so i sent him back to our truck with my rifle and tracked at least a mile into canada. never found him and he was the only game i've ever lost. made me sick. my next elk a week later took one into the heart feom 125 yds with a 250gr 338wm and crumbled on the spot.

i've hunted with a .308 MAS and a Garand but never shot anything with either. in fact the best (only, although i'm not likely to best it in a long time) deer i've gotten so far i got with an old, somewhat beat up remington bolt action 30-30. if that rifle could do it, i KNOW the FAL can.
