Are there any Rocky Mountain states that are not on the lottery system? I've got to come up with a Plan B, or it's no mountain hunting for me this year. :uhoh:

I don't know of any RSU. I lived in CO for three years. Got lucky two years running. Drew Cow tags, Muley and one year even got an Antelope tag. Not in the best areas, mind, but I saw game. Sadly I never got a shot at an Elk. No 400 yds shot for me and my riffle and tired eyes.

I looked around for any Elk country after I moved here that didn't have a lottery . No cigar. I mighta gave up too quick, I dunno.

Good luck Mister, hope ya get one. Mighty tasty, mighty tasty.

I think Colorado also has OTC bull tags for most units.

That's what I heard, and is looking to be my best option.

But I haven't hunted Colorado since '89. Where is a good place there to fill an Elk tag?

Thanks

Out here there is no tag system for game just yet....it is on the drawing board though. I was trying to get my head around the various requirements to hunt Elk and the like in the US. I would love to give this a try but the guided hunts remain too rich for my "photocopier repairman's" salary.

I agree Andy, the guided hunts are too much. I can afford it, but I don't throw money around like that. I'm too tight. :D

Splatter, where are you guys going to hunt? I was talking to a customer today that goes every year up to the Cortez area and hunts elk in national forest, camps out in tents, etc. Pretty spartan, the way I like it.

we are looking just east of there around lemon resevoir.. missionary ridge ,shearer creek areas..
we will most likely hike in or use huntr's horses, and tent camp, eating dehydrated food....spartan accomodations to say the least..
we have several options, pull my camper and his horse's and set the camper as base camp, ride the horses in , maybe stay over night, and hunt our way back the next day and go another direction after resupplying, but only what we can carry in packs, so if we do knock something down we can use the horses to pack it out, and carry our stuff on our back leading out the horses.....
packing on foot in, kill something and calling a friend to bring the horses up so we can pack out the meat......
or just ride the horses in set up camp, and hunt from there ..kill something and same as above , have camp on our backs, and horse hauling out the meat..
but we must make sure about water for the horses and feed...
huntr is correct,, horses are a big hassle to a point..

but they sure beat multiple trips with meat on your back..

just about everything is...and seperate season for weapon type..
i know of only one person who got drawn for an archery tag this year..

this state really sucks where a resident can't even get drawn...

there are a few places left for otc tags, but no critters...
thats why it's otc,,they want more money..sell tags for ghost critters..

I gave up hunting a few years back so my info may not be much help but check with Idaho F&G for non-res elk tags. Idsubgun might have up to date info, give him try.
