Not getting any good shots in on the lion, these guys get a lesson from their pissed off prey. This why he is called king of the jungle.

I'm not anti hunting by a long shot,.... but people should leave those big cats alone. They're some fine animals. The world is a lesser place without them.

C'mon, you know if you won the lottery that would be way up at the top of the list. Imagine how good that guys whiskey tasted that evening and how much he probably enjoyed his female companion.
I feel the way you do about our bears and moose - would rather look at them than shoot them. When I see a whitetail, I think of venisom sausage though.
If African big game hunting interests you, pick up a copy Death in the tall grass by Peter Capstick. It's got chapters on all the big game and is full of humor and adventure.

I agree Temp, in that clip I was kind hoping the lion would take down one of his killers in his final charge. What an awsome cat, I see no reason to kill one.

this one didn't run for me, is it the video where the lion sits there for a while, and eventually takes a high charge at the guy.. that's been around for a while..
I have hunted in Africa, and NEVER seen that in real life.. we always hunted over baits, never just out in the open.. several other hunters, and even the guy who guided my last trip said they thought it was a canned ranch hunt in SA, and cat might have been doped/sick.
Figure on $50k+ to do the 30 day safari with a decent but not spectacular elephant, and a lion... some countries have (rightly so) suspended lion hunting for a few years to give them some time to recouperate. Lion hunting apparently was a high demand item for all the doctors who could easily afford it.. what's the $5k trophy fee to some surgeon??
Actually, I think Leopards are the real game if you want a thrill.. they are way-way faster, far more elusive and cunning, sneaky sobs, and they will shred you like a cuisinart given 5 seconds of your distraction... they are way more reporductive than lions, and under no threat of extinction (75% cheaper to hunt also)

Troops, certain things to remember in lion hunting: First (courtesy of Robert Ruark), either you get your lion or the lion gets YOU.
Second: whilst I also like the look of lions, the way they move, hunt & kill other prey, I see no harm whatsoever in precisely ending the life of an old lion who would otherwise fall to being mauled by a younger lion & die a slow death from his wounds or who would be eaten alive by a pack of hungry hyenas. Either death, I would respectfully submit, is not as swift nor as dignified as a quick rifle shot to the vitals.
The lion is a magnificent animal, as is the elephant & whilst I personally have no desire to shoot a healthy specimen of either species, to cull the old & the infirm would be an act I would be proud to participate in.
I should also add that I do not & have never hunted for trophy heads/racks or other items of 'bragging rights'. I would far rather cull older animals or the female of the species for food or as a method of population control. Perhaps that is the English Gamekeeper in me but trophy heads frankly bore me & actually turn me off. Your view may be different & I do not look down on those who hunt for the trophy, there is room for all at the hunting table, just as long as the hunt is both sportsmanlike & honourable. Good will to all here.

If people don't hunt lions and elephants soon there would be none. People go there and pay high trophy fees which insure that the animals will continue. Countries that have all out bans on killing the big cats and Dumbo have lower populations then hunting countries because they don't have the resources to prevent poaching.
Also hippies, just because the Doctor who pays the fees to kill these things may or may not eat some do you realy thing they throw it out? Use your heads for a second, Africans are going to throw out food?
Its ok for you to hunt deer and turkeys and whatever else but people shouldn't hunt these animals becuse you think they are cute? Well some other confused hippies in this country are just as upset about you hunting these North American critters. They are no different then you.

Hunting Taliban is a sport. Shooting an animal from distance with a scope is not sport....

I'd hunt a lion if I had the opportunity. And I'm not otherwise a "sport" hunter. Hunting lions on the ground, on their own terms is one of the more dangerous things you can do. You need only read some of the works of Ruark or Capstick to understand that rifle or no rifle, that lion could very well win the battle.
Beautiful animal it is. But still an animal...

If it moves and its isn't against the law to kill, it is fair game.

Wisdom.....
I shot an elephant one time, as part of a culling operation in Zim..
An hour after she hit the ground, people started showing up, lot and lots of people.. about 200 I guess..
the skin was used, the meat was eaten, and the only thing left was the two thigh bones... NOTHING ELSE..

Why is hunting for fun not OK? The hunter in that video shelled out (pun intended) at least $50,000 for that hunt. Keep in mind that he most likely hunted for many other animals while he was there. Oh, the P.H. in that video is Jeff Rand and he doesn't come cheap. There were at least 7 people that you couldn't see in the video that were employed because of that hunt...
If we as humans are going to live on this planet and assert ourselves the way we have we need to maintain the animals that are affected by us. That means hunting. Lions are a keystone animal in Africa. If they are not doing well, no one else is either. Elephants are the other keystone animal. In Zimbabwe they cull around 20,000 a year to maintain the elephant population and keep the rest healthy.

Yeah everytime I see this clip, I find myself cheering for the lion.
My Uncle was a doctor and a avid big game hunter. Walking thru his house was an adventure. All kinds of mounts from Lions to Polar Bear. He died in 1991 and most of the animals were donated to the Indianapolis Childrens Museum. You Indy boys ought to go check it out.
Unfortunately his low lifed step son stole most of the nice guns and pawned them.
