If there are any hardcore bourbon fans out there I was looking for something new and maybe not that outrageously priced.
I typically drink Maker's or Woodford Reserve, have enjoyed the other small batch (Bookers, Bakers and Basil Hayden) but am looking more for something that doesn't ruin the bank account.
I tend to enjoy the mellower, sweeter varieties. Is Maker's Mark really the best compromise out there?

My favorite is Bulleit Frontier Whiskey. Its pretty smooth, kinda sweet, and not aged in charcoal barrels like some of the others are. I usually chase it with lemonade.

Knob Creek...Straight, Ice cold and on special occasions.

In my younger days, we sold scrap iron for a week to pay for a Xmas party on a construction job site on Preston Rd. Where we had 2 half gallons of every bourbon we could find in Dallas, we tried them all. The winner hands down was Wild Turkey, the party lasted for 8 hours. I had to call someone to drive me home, drunk for 3 days.
George Dickle, much better then Maker's Mark or Beam. JD is ok. I will drink bourbon, but prefer single malt scotch.

Whiskey from Tennessee is quite a bit more than a "technicality".
It's an abomination! It's like a mule in the Kentucky Derby.

Maybe one day I'll ask 'em over a bourbon. Maybe we'll discuss my scottish ancestory. Go straighten your skirt and have another sip of single malt.

Yep - I'm with Dean P. I've had a lot of different bourbons & whiskeys (all price ranges), but I always end up with Wild Turkey 101 or Old Grandad 114.
Ya gotta have more than 100 proof to have a good flavor:biggrin:

We have learned to enjoy good whiskey here in Texas, JD is one of them. To borrow a saying, corn, barley & rye is are my favorite grains
Make mine Evan Williams Single Barrel Straight KY Bourbon! :whiskey:

Two problems...blended AND canadian. Third problem...NOT bourbon.

Evan Williams Black.
About 18 bucks for the handle bottle in this neck of the woods.
Wild Turkey 101 on occasion.

May 09, 2005, 11:55
For the budget, Wild Turkey 80. 101's too strong to drink straight, pretty good on the rocks.
For the good stuff, Elijah Craig 18 year old single barrel Doesn't break the bank, and oh so good.
Eagle Rare is good. Aged and single barrel from Kentucky.

Jack Black for sippin, Makers Mark for swillin, Wild Turkey? Well that's just fer whenever I can't decide what to get.
I likem all.... Gotta a whole different spin on JD whwn I went to the distillery. Very cool place with some interesting history. Jack's been a friend of mine for a looong time.
Been doin the Irish Whiskey thing lately. Found "Bushmills" to be a good Blended, but gotta try a couple good singles. Stuff is very confusing to buy? Same with Scotch, everyone makes there own, and every clan thinks there's is the best. Gotta say I like the 12 Year olds the best "so far"...

My three best drinking bourbons in reverse order.
1. Evan Williams Black
2. Maker' Mark
3. Knob Creek.
Remember the question was about BOURBON, not whiskey. Two completely different things. A true bourbon must be aged in virgin charred oak barrels. The temperature differences between Kentucky winters and summers cause the burbon to slowly seep in and out of the charring, giving bourbon the distinctive color, aroma and taste of the nectar of the Gods. The barrels used to age bourbon can never be used again for bourbon, some whiskeys are aged in used bourbon barrels.
Bourbon is a first cousin to Scotch Single Malts. The Scots immigrants who came over to the USA in the first immigration wave back in the 1700's settled in the Appalachian mountains, and since whiskey was much easier to transport and sell than grain, ended up being the product of choice, that is, until that traitor George Washington:uhoh: :uhoh:  passed the whiskey tax and sent troops into the mountains to enforce it.
Look up the Whiskey Rebellion in thehistory books, that is if they even mention it. Don't even get me started on the Bonus Marchers back in the 1920's.

I am not a big burbon drinker. but I will vote for Southern Comfort.
Back in my younger days, I drank a good bit of Old Forester when I could not afford Southern Comfort. I think the company Brown-Forman owns..
Jack Daniels
Southern Comfort
Old Forester
Canadian Mist
Pepe Lopez tequilla
Bolla Wines
Korbel Champaign
They had annual sales in 2004 of $2,213,000,000 and a net profit of $258,000,000. Wow...that is only $.12 profit out of every $1 in sales. Somebody is hiding some profit!:shades:

I'm with TEMP. Moskovskaya is better than any of the 'bourbons.'
Cold brewed, cold distilled, and cold filtered. Kentuckians could use a little learnin' from those boys.
Kelly's Liquor Store here in town used to carry it, but since they were bought out by the Chinese, 'No Mo!' is what the chin tells me. Shit, I miss the Bird of Paradise.
Oh well, gonna be headin' up to Portland, OR for my annual fishing trip. Russian Vodka is readily available up there. I always bring back lots o' joy juice.

I can't believe I hadn't seen this thread until now. I'm not really an expert on Bourbons, but I have tried (and routinely drink) many of them. Here's my favorites list:
First know that I think Bourbon should be drank straight (either neat or on ice). I love the smoky rich flavor that Bourbon has and I don't want any coke or anything else detracting from that flavor. Although I do realize many people just want a bourbon for mixed drinks so I've inlcuded some recommendations for that as well.
1st: Booker's
Absolutely the best tasting smoothest bourbon I have ever had. Real rich flavor. But its so expensive that I usually just drink one glass of it before switching to something else. Its also uncut (~125 proof alcohol) so I can't drink much of it and remain coherent. :D
http://www.whisky.fr/contenu/img/408.gif
2nd: Tie between Baker's and Knob Creek
These are very tasty bourbons. Not quite as mature tasting or as smooth as Bookers but damn close. Also since Knob Creek is a little cheaper I usually have it around as one of my house bourbons.
http://www.thehound.com/media/images/products/medium/JW/OFJWBOURBAK_7945.jpg
http://www.whisky.fr/contenu/img/415.gif
3rd: Labrot and Graham Woodford Reserve
About the same price as Knob Creek but just slightly different in flavor. This is another one of my house bourbons that is always handy.
http://www.elalmanaque.com/turismo/torres/woodford.jpg
4th: Tie between Maker's Mark and Eagle Rare
Both of these bourbons are very palatable and at only $20-$25 a bottle you can't go wrong.
http://www.whisky.fr/contenu/img/20416.jpg
http://www.whisky.fr/img2/produit/v493.jpg
5th: Tie between Jim Beam, Wild Turkey, and Evan Williams Single Barrel (note that this is the Evan Williams Single Barrel NOT regular Evan Williams which is awful).
I have had a lot of Jim Beam in my day. I still think it is a decent bourbon for the price but it certainly doesn't have the flavor of any of the bourbons above. Wild Turkey and Evan Williams Single Barrel are also in a similar catagory. Decent taste for the price. If you want a good tasting bourbon but don't want to spend the money for a great tasting bourbon then you can't go wrong with one of these. Also if you want a bourbon only for mixed drinks then I would choose one from this group.

Most of the above listed are over priced and have very little character.
The best bourbon for the money is Jim Beam Black Label.
The best bourbon period is Old Rip Van Winkle 10, 12, 15, or 20 year old, its all good. This bourbon is only released to distributers twice a year so its hard to find at times.
Knob Creek is drinkable, Makers Mark aint bad but Wild Turkey is just plain nasty. And besides Wild Turkey is owned by the French which is reason enough to shun it.
Jack Daniels is for burnt out old bikers and toothless fat chicks....how do you think burnt out bikers and toothless fat chicks get laid? Massive amounts of Jack.

You will usually fin Wild Turkey Russell's reseve here, it's more like the Wild Turkey before they cut down the aging on the regular stuff. Our local liquor store blew some out a few years ago $2 a bottle less than regular Turkey. I stocked up, but recently ran out.
Basil Hayden is pretty good, I recently tried a bottle of it. Too spendy for the money I think. Taste is better than Turkey, but not by the difference in price for me.
Maker's Mark is ok, but it doesn't suit me.
The cheapest I will go is Beam.
Knob Creek is pretty good too, but not worth more money than Wild Turkey in my opinon.

I know what your saying, everyones taste is different. I look at price vs taste. A bottle of bourbon damned well better be good for $50+ a bottle like some have listed. Also just because a bourbon is smooth doesnt mean it tastes good. A lot of people judge bourbon by its smoothness or expensive price and over look the flavor. Jim Beam Black costs me around $14 a bottle and the 10 year old Old Rip Van Winkle is $22. By the way you can order Old Rip off the net.

I couldn't agree more. Most properly aged whiskeys will be smooth, but its mainly the deep rich flavor and smoky aroma distinctive to bourbon that I truly enjoy.

I had forgotten about Rebel Yell, or as we say around camp the morning after "Rebel Yelp".
