These have been getting out of hand!
The server is too busy at the moment. There are currently too many users online. Please try again in a few minutes.

Even the EvMod sees it once in awhile. If all 1500 monkeys line up and hit 'send' at the same time, the machine loads up pretty high. It is not too often. Get coffee while you wait?

It was the worst I've seen it last night - I was getting "the message" 5-10 times before I could post or change pages(this between 00.01 & 02.30GMT -dunno what that is in US time  )

Not true Pete....some of DO pay here and these messages are more than annoying. Try to put up an ad after you spent 30 min on it and The server is too busy at the moment. There are currently too many users online. Please try again in a few minutes.
Thirty minutes down the drain.....
And I don't buy the "monkeys hitting send all at the same time" story either.
I remember when we had many thousands of members on at the same time and never once got that message.
Yep....go to your porno site Pete...I'll bet you spend big bucks over there! Why I have no clue with Pinky's so close.

I just disabled the search feature any time the server load goes up too high. A large portion of the problem is searches pegging the server load. Many here don't realize just how huge our database is, and some searches are cpu and memory intensive and that is frequently what causes the server too busy errors all the time.
I will modify this to restrict the server load limitations only to non-contributors so that our contributing users won't be affected by the change, but for right now it affects everyone.

To hell with it, I'm not going to bother putting any more money into the site, no new servers, no net connection upgrades, to hell with it, it's a waste of money.
In all seriousness, if you guys hate it here so much, go somewhere else and waste someone elses bandwidth and server resources. I don't understand why you keep posting BS like this if you don't like the site, then leave already.
Have a nice day.

LOL, i found it amazing when i clicked on the quotation marks to reply, i got the message, "The server is too busy at the moment. There are currently too many users online. Please try again in a few minutes."
Now i think its a conspiracy!!!
All seriousness aside, i hate to see you upset. Medication is fairly cheap or if not covered by insurance, can be purchased a few doses at a time.
That being said, i like it here. I liked it well enough that i am a "bronze contibutor" for what that is worth. Just because i like it here, doesnt mean that i can't be a bit critical at times, I love my country but i am critical of some of our actions too.
As far as your coment about not putting anymore money in the site, that's your business decision and your call. Seeing as its YOUR SITE, if it truly bothers you, you can follow in the footsteps of a couple of other boards and simply delete the posts you dont like and bar the members.
Otherwise....have a nice day! :D
Just IMHO

Didn't mean for this thread to evolve into a bash the FAL Files OR Jen fest. I posted it (OK a little out of frustration) to communicate the server overload condition to the System Adminstrator. The reason I felt compelled to do this is because the 'BUSY' message, in the frequency that they are occurring, is something new. Up until roughly a week ago, I would say they were somewhat rare, maybe 2-4 times a month...no big deal. Now its a constant nightly battle. I can spend 2 hours cruising thru the posts and it will popup 'BUSY' half a dozen times or more. Just reporting this so the proper individuals can monitor server status to see if anything has changed.
Jen, I like the FAL Files, it is my single largest source of evening entertainment. I value the information here as well as the humor and cameraderie. I support the Files and will continue to do so 'No Strings Attached'.
As I am a web developer and a person that has been in IT for 25 years, I am completely aware of the blood, sweat and tears that Jen puts into this forum. My hats off to you Jen. I think you do a marvelous job.

Observation: The Firearms Related Discussion forum seems to be defaulting to a 30 day query instead of the standard 1 day. With the number of users usually in there that could represent a pretty sizable DB hit.

What kind of hardware/software is the system running on?
Maybe it's time for a multi-processor server and some database tuning.
Also, if the database uses page locking vs. row locking, it can tie things up seriously. Most db allow you to switch.

My post didnt bash anyone.
The truth is the truth.
We can all see it and it's not an "all or nothing" proposition.
"Love it or leave it" seems like an easy cop-out.
