I sent a buddy down to KY Imports for some loose packed WCC surplus .223 55gr FMJ M193 ammo they had for $130 per 1K. It was all bright and shiney new looking ammo. Before everyone starts calling KY Imports, this was the last can they said they had, Too bad because it looks great. I was sorting it out looking for any bad rounds that may be in it only found 4 by the way, and I found something very strange. Exactly half the can was WCC 94- WCC96 headstamped (Top Half). But in the bottom half of the can it was Lake City LC97 thru LC02 headstamped, but the strange thing is that the LC stuff had 52gr HP bullets instead of the expected 55gr FMJ. I pulled some and weighed them as well as the powder charge. The powder looks like AA2460 and it had 26.9 gr of it. It chrony at an avg of 3216 fps. I was not aware that there was any mil-surplus out there with a 52gr Hp bullet. Can anyone shed some light on this stuff, or know why it may have been loaded with that particular bullet. It does not appear to be a reload but a factory loaded round. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

I can't remember where I read it but the ammo in question is the result of Federal taking over the Lake City plant. They used up the remaining brass and bullets to verify the production line. It is the same as GI ammo but because it was a test run, they don't want to ship it to the military. It meets all specs but isn't pure Federal ammo. The headstamps will be of various years but it was made recently.

If you are happy with the price, keep it. It's new and to spec.
