BTS, I have no recommendations but I believe $50 for a transfer is damn steep. The FFL holders doing transfers at the Colorado gun shows charge $10 and that is the maxinum they can charge, by law, while AT the Colorado shows. Geez, for that $50 they ought to at least give a warrantee / guarantee on the weapon they are handling in the transfer. IMHO. I guess the 15% of the sale for transferring a consignment is not TOO out of line but when it comes time to buy a new weapon for one of those shops, I'd sure remember getting "ripped off" by them when they are making a common transfer for me. Again, IMHO.

I completely agree that $50 is too much.
That's why I'm hoping we can add a lot more shops to this list so we know where to go and where to avoid.
I'm just starting this - and I hope anyone who has any dealings at all will add to this list. My goal is to report to you guys what I've found out - not neccesarily that I think you should go somewhere that charges $50.

In the Peoples Republic of Illinois, especially the 6 collar counties around Chicago, $50 is average fee for transfers. I have seen as high as $75-100. The dealers claim they must charge such high fees because otherwise people will not buy from them but simply order from others and transfer through them. I think that if I were an FFL I would be delighted to to $50 trasnfers all day. Could make some money, but again Illinois is one of the most gun unfriendly states in the nation. The AWB is alive and well in Chicago, and Cook County.
The situation is such that there is NO ffl left in the city of Chicago. The city just made it impossible for them to do business. The city's reward? To become the murder capital of the nation. For 2004 they are claiming that they are no longer that, just number 2. Great. Thanks little Richie, AKA Mayor Little Boss.

Jack2427.....and that's one of the reasons why I moved from Illinois out to Colorado. I'd like to see one of those Illinois dealers, who charge $50 and up, have a dead battery in their vehicle. Yes, I'd gladly furnish the jumper cables and just before attaching them to my battery for the jump, tell that that I'm sorry but I'm forced to have to charge somewhere between $35 and 50 for my services. Then remind them that this is just how we feel when they are "helping" with their services.

awesome shop, great bunch of guys, and prices often better than you could dig up online.
Grandpa's Pawn
Main St in Longmont
$25 transfers

The owner Bob Jensen is an OK guy, but is moody and tends to direct his customers toward firearms he preffers and away from others that are very reputable. I suspect it is profit motivated. He also will tell you he's a cop shop, when he doesn't have the firearm your looking for, but has extensive Eastern block guns. Rocky mountain shhoters supply in Fort Collins has a much better attitude, and will accomodate you, and call you back promptly with prices and availability. There just off the I25 exit to Mullberry in Fort Collins a 1/4 mile west off the exit.

The Firing Line on Potomac St Just north of Alameda. $30 transfers, about the cheapest in the Aurora area I have been able to find, and pretty easy to deal with.
Their guns on the other hand are pretty expensive, I can buy new most of the time for what they charge on used ones.
I won't mention the scandals about two people offing themselves within the last year at their indoor pistol range.

Can't berelive that no one has metioned Green Montain Guns in Lakewood.
Merv and crew are most ecelcellent people to deal with. AND Merv sells CorrosionX! MOST EXCELLENT! He charges $25.00 for transfers.
After having on been charged $10.00 pre transfer in Texas, ANYTHING over that amout is too high. I do not understand why transferrs are so high up here. There is NOT that much paper work that had to be done. Oh well, easy money for the shops I guess.

After a problem with ignorance and an employee getting beligerant I will never recommend the Firing line for transfers again, besides their prices are pretty high on just about any gun in the place. One of the guys insisted it is illegal to transfer from an out of state private owner directly to their FFL here in CO, funny I have done it 2x with them already, I was called a liar. I offerred to show him it was legal and where it says it right on the ATF page, and was told he didn't have time for that, so I recommend staying away from that place. Sad I have been dealing with them for 2 years now.
I found an awesome guy for transfers, VERY easy to deal with, friendly and laid back. He has a gunsmithing shop, no showroom, but will order stuff for you. The place is TJ's on Buckley/Airport just south of 6th, $20 transfer fee, and like I said friendly and easy to deal with. Has no problems with out of state private owner transfers.

Bill Stark. Does it out of his home. Very professional. He's listed on Gunbroker. (303-771-4593) Lives near Yosemite & Dry Creek (South Denver) You stop by, fill out his form, and he sends his form to the seller. In the meantime, he gets the okay from CBI, and gives you a call when your purchase arrives.
BTW, ALPHA PAWN SUCKS. I notified them that I wanted to use them, and 3 days later, they still hadn't FAXED their FFL to the seller of my receiver. Oh yeah, they advertise $15 for transfers, yet charge $20. I'm sorry, but being an FFL is a business. If you're paying more than $10 for a transfer, I hope the "reach around" you've received was worth it. Put another way, think about your last gun purchase, if the price was double what you paid, would you try to convince everyone what a great deal you got because the guy was really nice? To me, people overcharging for transfers are like carpetbaggers for gun grabbers, and I say no thanks.

The Shootist just off Sante Fe and Dartmouth does transfers for either $30 or $35.
I've also heard that Alan Samuel in Dumont (I-70 at mm 235) is a dealer that only charges $20 for transfers. I'm thinking of going through him when my DSA FAL is ready to be delivered. He advertises on Coloradoshooting.org.

+1 to Green Mtn Guns. I've done quite well by them.
+1 to Jensen Arms. Done a bunch with them. Moody but they will deal. Haven't been to the new location yet so can't say how they're faring yet.
I've heard good things about Hickmans in CS.
Neve's Uniform Supply 51st and Uinta (N on Pecos from I-70 6 blocks and go 1 block east) THey deal mostly with LE weapons and can't sell, pardon the term, civilians a LE Glock but they can and do sell used Glocks (and others) for a heck of a deal. Their stock varies, but if you want a good used Glock for a good price, $325 for a G-21 1st gen. They're the place to go.
And I wouldn't do business with Dave's if I was paid to do so.
His business practices are beyond suspect.
The business (FFL) license is in his wifes name. Wonder why? (quietly now, felon)

Excellent selection, inventory seems to turn fairly fast w/Ft Carson and a few Air Force installations nearby.
They are very friendly and helpful, even if you are not buying. Based on my good experiences with them, I've started buying there instead of online even though their prices run to the high side.

I found a fairly complete list on gunsamerica in the "Find An FFL" at the bottom of their page. Just put in your zip code, and it shows the dealers in your area and their prices. Real quick way to figure out how to find someone to do the transfer, and get that new fal into your hands so you can go bang it off. Cause nuthinz better than bangin off that new fal! "Biggrin when you bang off that new fal!"

An update on some of the previously posted info -
Dave's on Parker Rd. has gone out of business.
Gunworks of Colorado closed a few years ago, but recently Green Mountain Guns moved into their old location. So now Green Mountain guns is at 3355 S. Yarrow in Lakewood. BTW, Green Mountain Guns will do a FFL transfer for $25. I did one there last week.
The Firing Line in Aurora is a nice place to shoot with decent range fees, though I never bought anything but a holster there, their prices seem average.
On the west side of town, what long ago used to be the Foothills Shooting Center has reopened as the Green Mountain Family Shooting Center. A bit steep on the range fees, but a nice facility. No gun shop at present.

I forgot TJ's does transfers for military for $20.
All the Gunsmiths at TJ's are graduates (two full time, one part time if I remember) of the Colorado School of Trades as well. They do top notch smith work as well, everyday stuff to the unusual.
