View Full Version : Load-bearing equipment - FAL magazine pouches?

We all need to carry rifle magazines when out shooting at some time or another but I've always avoided bags and pouches that hang off belts - I hate to feel them flopping around and they inhibit movement and riding in vehicles. A load-bearing vest solves those problems but in the tropics the heat is unbearable under the nylon. I always thought the Commie method of carrying magazines on the chest was great and Numrich has a deal on Chinese AK mag pouches in a chest harness. I bought one and have found each of the three front pouches holds one AK47 magazine or two M16 magazines so I'm changing the twister buttons on the flaps to regular snap closures. The pockets do not fit my M14 or SLR magazines.
My question is this, I'd like to cut off the grenade pouches and sew on pouches that fit one SLR/M14 magazine snugly on each side. Does anyone know a good source for soft, sewable FAL single-mag pouches?

Tactical Tailor might have what you're looking for.

kfranz had some Type 63 chest pouches fo9r sale a few months ago.
Get in touch with him, he may be able to hook you up.....
I have one, and after a coat of camo paint, it's a cool piece of gear. I may be a bit wide for the straps, but it's cool...

I got a type 63 from Kfranz a while back and it works great. Holds 7 FAL mags perfect.

You can also use the military issue mag pouches for m-16 and cut the dividers out and it will fit 2 Fal mags! they were made to fit 3 M-16:wink:

Has anybody tried the leg-drop pouches made by Blackhawk for the FAL/M1A?
They're kinda of pricey, but I've got other Blackhawk gear and it's all first rate.

You might consider getting some of the Tactical Tailor FAL Magazine pouches or the single mag shingles. They attach with Malice clips which means minimal alterations of your existing rig - Just get a couple of strips of 1" webbing and make your own MOLLE/PALS attachment points for the Malice clips to attach to.

I keep them in several different pouches, including: canvas M14 dual mag pouch, canvas M14 single mag pouch, ALICE M16 mag pouch, and the rest are in the magazine pockets of an Eagle Brand soft rifle case.
I don't care for the single mag pouches. They are difficult to rapidly re-insert a mag into. The Austrian leather mag pouches that I got from DSA were too worn out for my tastes, and got tossed.
The nylon M16 pouches work superb for carrying two FAL mags that are equipped with MagPuls. They of course fit sideways, and the pouch requires the removal of the inside dividers.

if the pouches are constructed "correctly" ;) then single mag pouches will work with extracts and re-inserts.

Lots of Canadian 20 and 30 round pouches out there. I have some of each and like them a lot. They have a little tab that you pull on to extract the mag and doesn't get in the way of reinserting a mag. The 30 rounders sit high on the belt and are best used with a harness or some type of MOELLE vest.

I put a field dressing or triangle bandage package in the bottom of my M16 mag pouches when using my gear for my FAL or M1A. Makes the mags sit higher and easier to extract when needed. Also, I have the safe feeling that if I need the bandage for some reason, I have the bandage at hand.

Anyone with experience using FMCO (http://www.antipersonnel.net/fmco/index.html) load bearing vests?

I consider it 'raid' gear. For that purpose, no additional padding was on my list. The A-10 rig is padded quite well, and seems right for longer missions than an in/out raid. I use the A11 almost exclusively at our local shoots: it has fulfilled my every objective.
Now, about that A-10: THAT is nice gear!

It'd be easy enough to rig up pads for the A-11. The way Eli explained it to me before I bought Assaultvest.com (and before he was KIA), the A-11 was more for REMF troops who needed some basic LBE but not a full-on vest or kit.
I like the A-10 a lot...when I get a few more in I'll snag me one and mod it by moving that compass pouch to the RIGHT shoulder, so I can shoot left-handed. :)

Jacketch,
I started looking for gear about a year and a half ago. I found FMCO and thought it looked functional... That is until I started finding real tactical gear. FMCO is not that great in my oppinion. I am sure it will work as intended. How ever, I have found stuff that is so much more functional and addaptable. I am only looking at stuff that is covered in PALS webbing now. Like the MESA vest. I also am looking very longingly at the Callahan
Lightfighter.com has them for sale, along with many other places.

They are great for carring 5 or 6 mags tight against your body, and carrying Level IV balistic plates. Plus they are covered in PALS webbing so you can load them out how ever you want from one mission to the next. Any pouch that makes use of MALICE clips or that attaches to PALS channels will work. At this point I am basicly looking for some one to talk me out of buying the Callahan. The Wasatch from HSGI is coming very close...
Any way, FMCO is plain jane stuff... It works, I'm sure, but alot of guys want to look cool as well.

ask USMC03
IIRC he bought one, loaded up, promptly returned to his TTMAV and sold off the callahan.
That being said, its not everybody's boat, and >300 is more than what I would pay for a souped up plate carrier.

I think Quiet Shooter likes his. He has posted pictures of his latest trip to the range, somewhere on here or over at AR15.com some place.

As a civilian , a canvas M-14 pouch.
I don't need a Tac vest etc because other younger men are standin that wall, thank God .
I never liked anything that might raise my body above the earth, or scoop up dirt If I needed to crawl
I was an air force wienie, so my thoughts are of little value, our job was to keep mushroom clouds off us.

I never had a problem with the Air Force, my Daddy did his hitch as an Air Policeman in the 50's and my brother was in in the late 70-early 80's while the smart ones in the family, my older Sister and I opted for the Corps.
I am very Thankful that you guy's and gal's did what was needed and I didn't ever see a mushroom cloud with my name on it.
