but nothing that I can be proud or happy about.

got a radio call to back up our local Ohio game control officer. call came in, a driver sighted a large buck with a arrow hanging out of his side and visibly bleeding from the mouth walking along the side of the road.

ahhh....this was in city limits, off the edge of a large college farm/runway/airport facility.

I met the guy who had initially spotted him at our office, drove back to the scene, about a quarter mile away. we walked through the treeline between fields, spotlighted him with my duty flashlight.

he was down, but still alive. I could see the lower part of mouth covered with blood. grabbed two slugs for the 870, did what had to be done. almost cried about it, too.

I'd bet paychecks he'd been hanging around in this area (city limits, no hunting!), some a$$hole grabbed his bow and shot him from the side of the road, thinking he could get him in his truck and tag him before anyone showed up... the game control officer agreed with me on that too.

one of the city units showed up, he wasn't happy about it either. he said he'd brief extra patrol in this area for awhile.

a week later, I'm still angry about it.

(reading back on this, I didn't mean to sound so bitter. it just irritates me about some of the slobs out there. sorry, just had to vent.)

I feel your bitterness. Too many people hunt outside the law which paints a bad picture for the many law-abiding and ethical hunters. Roadside shooting is common here as well and I am vocal when yahoos brag about their exploits.
I'd much rather spend all season doing it right and take nothing than to take the easy route and be a poacher or pull a shoot and run. It really gets under my skin hearing some of the stories circulating around of yahoos bagging game no matter what they have to do to get it.

Anyway, what did you do with the meat and rack?

the original guy that called it in and met me at the scene got him. game warden made the call, not me.

I had a reasonably good feeling he didn't have anything to do with it, other than showing up at the right place at the right time. (and yeah, I checked his truck, no bow in it!)

I'm glad the meat was harvested. I'm sorry the buck had to suffer for such a long period of time. You did what had to be done.

Every hobby or interest has A$$#0les associated with them. Unfortunately with hunting being such a hot button issue they just seem to make it that much worse. The rest of us have to be that much more honorable and vigilant.
