Does anyone out there know of an online ALICE kit manual?
I'm thinking of setting upa survival kit based on the ALICE system, and I'm trying to find a downloadable manual on its rigging, & use.
I've found a couple of really prro scans, but most of them are illegible when printed.
Thanx.

What Are you looking to pack? Starting from the inside out, I would suggest getting a BELT PAD, this goes a long way in aiding comfort.

Look to replace using the metal ALICE clips with lengths of 550 cord.

Cut off the metal snap hooks off the ends of the suspenders and replace with lengths of 550 cord that is threaded through the upper row of grommets on the pistol belt.

If you want to hump any sort of rucksack and want to carry a buttpack on the LBE, then do not hook up the upper eyelets of the buttpack, just let it flop. Again, this will force you to rethink what and how you pack your essentials.

THe idea is to use the ALICE system, kind of in the way it was designed. A 1 or 2 day light subsistance rig, and the pack (probably not ALICE) for more extended support.
The Base load would be:
2 changes of socks & underwear.
1 shirt/pants set.
1 set sweats.
Maintenance & cleaning kit for the FAL.
All in the fanny pack.
First aid kit ( modified from the service issue by adding routine medications such as asprin)
2 Qt. canteen. & water purifying tabs.
shovel.
fixed blade knife (not a bayonet)
"Leatherman" tool.
50' para. cord.
4 X 20 rnd FAL magazines, loaded.
The FAL, also loaded.
Flashlight & survival type AA batteries. (the batteries are non active until a screw is turned to mix the elecrolytes, this gives an almost indefinate shelf life.)
Local topo map & compass.
2 way radio & spare batteries.
freeze dried food for 2 good meals.
British style mess tins. (The food goes inside if packed correctly.)
fire starter.
spare glasses.

This is the base kit, packed in the fanny pack & pouches on the harness.
The larger pack will contain more clothing, food, sleeping bag, broken down tent
& consumables such a batteries.
There will be a companion pack for the significant other. That will contain the clothing for her, together with her essentials, and the other radio. Firearms will be smaller & lighter consisting of a 10-22, mags, spare ammunition, & field cleaning kit.
No I'm not being sexist... this was her choice of equipment, based on her capacity to carry & use.

The kit has been packed , & it fits. Total weight of the basee kit is about 25 Lbs. The large pack weighs about 30 Lbs. the smaller one about 28.

The goal is to have a "Universal" kit suitable for all kinds of emergencies, not just a survivalist special, ready for the end of civilization. But capable of giving a head start in any kind of evacuation scenario. With this in mind the kit can be made socially acceptable by the omission of the web gear, but ready to be made more versatile by adding it to the mix.

Incidentally we did a bail out drill from scratch, and from start to departure it took 12 minutes.
