anything is better than the prison/gas station attendant uniforms that we have now.

They look reasonable, I agree with daemon, about time the Navy gets some better Uniforms.

The bell bottoms look bad.
I agree with the others, anything is better than what the Navy has now.

The only bell bottoms I know of are the dress blue/whites, I can't imagine the Navy doing away with either.

The utilities are belled. But I can't see us (the snipes in the propulsion plant) cleaning bilges with urban camo BDU's. It's hot enough standing watch on a distilling unit without having to blouse your trousers.

Oh yeah, that was another lifetime I still have nightmares about.

You can have the snipe's job. I went on sea trials onboard the Constellation out of PNSY. I had to do a tour in 3 Main. Too noisy, and way too hot for me. I sat under an air vent, with ear plugs and muffs on. It was still noisy, and hot.

The only thing worse was crawling into a pitch blank empty tank to find a fuel manifold that was leaking while hearing the ocean rush by my left ear. Not too cool.

you know Joe I lived with my ear plugs in. Took off the mickey mouse ears when I wasn't in the plant. I remember taking showers and wondering why my ears felt so strange until I thought to take out the plugs.

You could alway tell the snipes when walking around the ship. They were dirty, and had ear muffs attached to their heads.

what's that sound?? ahhh salt.... You guys are boat navy. While i have been on 5 carriers i am an airdale. And being in the desert or being in the snow I would take bdu's over utilities anyday.

Boat Navy? Ha. I thought aircraft carriers were boats/ships. Are there any Seabees out there?:p

I spent my time with the Gator Navy while I was USMC. Biggest ship I was ever on was the Austin. The Harlan County & Spartanburg County were second homes to me in '83 and '85 respectively.

I got lost on the Kitty Hawk my first day at PNSY. After a couple weeks I knew it like the back of my hand. Then I got to work on a retired FFG out in Long Beach that was being sold to Taiwan. The Brewton, IIRC. Talk about culture shock. Going from a CV to an FFG was a big change. I actually had to walk down the gangway, instead of climbing up.

I sure miss those days...

Dungarees which were the working uniforms when I was in active duty, were also bell bottoms. Most of the snipes on board the ships I served on (an AOR and a couple of DDs) wore the blue overalls - if they could get ahold of them. The last active duty reserve unit I served with was an SBU - we had green utilities issued to us - and never had an occasion to wear any dress uniforms though I didn't mind the look of the cracker jacks 'cept for those damn 13 buttons if you needed to hit the head :uhoh: I still don't see the need for cammies out at sea:confused:

Reagrdless of what you're on, aren't you all sailors?!? Love picking on the squids, all in fun though. Actually, the Navy allowed the dungarees to go straight leg a few years ago IIRC. I am not thrilled with everyone going out and designing their own special uniform, it's going to cost the troops more $$$ that could be better spent on their families and the like.
And Joe, quit it with the PNSY memories, it's a Business Center now! In fact, there are a bunch of foreign workers living back in housing by the Navy Lodge, with domestic transplants living in the Lodge. M and N sectors of the First District!

I agree the Navy needs new working uniforms, let's be honest the dungarees look like crap. The only thing that came to mind was how can you see the poor squid in the new camos on a man overboard? It was hard enough in the blue "poopy suits" or dungarees. My vote (like it matters) is a solid blue or grey working BDU type uniform. When I was on subs we wore "poopy suits" a light weight navy blue coverall that was quite comfortable, but then again it was always a comfortable 68 degrees underway.
I was on the USS Sunfish SSN-649 Charleston, SC and Norfolk,Va 85-89.
Pray for your/our troops.
Peace,
David
