well it ain't a mag that BETA CO made......looks as if it is either a prop, to make the stock look good, or somebody made a drum mag that might work.

It's a WWII German MG34, 75rd. drum mag. Made for 8mm but some were modified to 7.62mm Nato (Israel used a lot of MG34's early on).

A batch of these drums were converted to .308 with HK or FAL towers about ten/twelve years ago. Problem is that the original German WWII drums were $400-500 each. The price on these drums is rather more now. So, a converted drum for a FAL would probably be a $1000 project.
I have been told by someone 'high up' at Beta that they will begin engineering for a .308 drum early next year. Patience, grasshopper! :fal:

It is actually an MG 15 drum modifiied for FAL. The MG-34 is belt fed and MG-15 is box magazine fed w/ conventional spring. The drums used to be available in the $200.00 dollar range, now around $400.00..when you find one.

Saw one of these at Knob Creek last year. IIRC, it had a $750 price tag on it.

Correct on the definition of the base drum,.....MG15, but a little low on the estimate for the conversion. Viking was selling these for $1600(or at least attempting to).

Stack up 4 loaded steel 20 round mags and you are getting close to the weight.
Practical? Not really. However might be fun for my Izzy Heavy Barrel, if the price of the Betas isn't TOO high.
For instance, the 100 round Beta 223 mags are selling for in the neighborhood of $250.00, which will buy you at least 20 M-16 30 round mags. (That same $250.00 will also purchase up to FIFTY FAL or G3 mags.) Add in the factor that two M-16 3 mag pouches gives you 180 rounds, much cheaper and easier to transport, then practical is not the word you're looking for.

personally, i can't wait to get my hands on one.
practical? probably not.
fun? you betcha.
Why do we need motorcycles that top 200+ MPH? Cars that go 160 MPH? mags that hold over 10 rounds for shooting paper? We don't need any of the above.
I think some of you folks are reading too much into it. "it's be heavy". I'm guessing you don't mind carrying around the 30 LB spare tire around your waist? If a few pounds were such a burden, get to the gym. (BTW, i have a 20 LB spare tire, so don't take the above as a cheap shot).

I'll be buying at least two for the SAWFAL....
Of course, this is not it's final form yet, and the barrel now is longer, this is photoshopped version of about what it'll look like...

SOON SOON.
till then. make them from a chinese drum (yes it can be done)have seen one of them run in a HK91
and take a look at the HK11 drum (HK11= mag fed HK21 look alike)
60 rd drum and a 100 rd drum also runs in a HK91
it's the one that looks like a chinese drum with a HK twist
the chinese drums with out the cost of the HK price
after adding the 3rd rd plate and 3/4" band(to the lid) and mag top (to the 308 you like HK/FAL/M1A/GALIL)
the rest in just a bit of testing to get it to look good

I am making 75 rd drums for your FAL weapons and most other .308 cal guns. The basic dimensions will be the same as the picture you see, but they will be brand new, not converted old mags. Hoping to be in the sub $300 range for these. Working on the prototypes now, will be mostly CNC machined from Aluminum, and composites, except for wear items and the steel towers. Any interest out there???

Brian,
There's plenty of interest. Just don't make the drum so big as to not sit nicely under the Heavy Barrelled guns without touching the ground. If some capacity is sacrificed, that's OK by me. I was going to make a 50-60 round drum later next year once my machine shop is set up, and may still.

If they are under $300 and they work well, sign me up for three of them!
